What would happen if intelligent life....

came to us in all their glory and offered us the technology to exist outside our planet, BUT they ate cats and dogs, treated there women like animals and polluted other worlds, and there were other planets, also with sufficient tech to travel space and they to had similar cultures, maybe drug addiction was the norm or slavery, and they were quite happy about it except for a few dissidents.

Do you think our world would take thier tech then try to change them?
Do you think we as a planet would say no thanks?
Or would we take their tech and then be ignorant to their cultures?

Yeah, I think that would be what the world leaders would choose at first. Once they got hold of the technology and figured out how to make it work for them, then it would be:

Makes me wonder if we were tested with the technology given to us back
in the 40's. Since we blundered so badly with that, we have not been given anymore.

I could definately see humans being used to destroy themselves. We're very very good at it. Give us some more powerful weapons (or what we have now and a bit a time) and it is likely we'll destroy ourselves.

But they don’t necessarily have to be that intelligent. Lets say they were just wondering the stars and came across us and decided to introduce themselves. They had acquired tech and just wanted to pass it on as they couldn’t stop laughing at how pathetic we were and thought they would give us a helping hand. Although i too have to agree with you, but we really don’t know. How would we know?

So if they gave us the tech would it matter if they ate little cute fluffy animals raw and kept their women on a leash, if it meant we could traverse the stars? Or.....

And if we were to try to change them, wouldn’t they feel angry with that, seeing as it was them that helped us in the first place? What right would we have?

Warfare doesnt require much intelligence, so unless its cave people that are trying to contact us to give us the magic of fire, I think they are intelligent enough.

Obviously, yes. Human sacrifices or slavery has never stopped technological trade. Why would something as trivial as that do anything?

We should not judge them for keeping their women on a leash, Hell, i've had girlfriends that demanded it of me......< sigh >....

We'd probably take it anyway. Being the self-destructive, greedy creatures we are, we'd probably jump at the chance to go screw up another planet despite the way we get the technology to do so.

Thanks for your reply’s.The world doesn’t really care what you do if your supplying them with something they want, but once they have it, and others have it to give to, then the world turns and stabs you in the back. I think there would at least be a debate on the moral issues of dealing with such aliens, but it wouldn’t win.

IMO i think that we could easily trade with them and accept their culture as it is.On earth countries can trade with each other and accept each others culture, albeit that i dont know any country that still has slave trading etc.

What if the entire reson we were given the tech is because we are so warlike?
What if in order to earn the tech we had to commit a certain number of troops to an intergalatic war?
Say 5 million gets you cold fusion, 20 million gets you anti grav and warp drive, 100 million gets you terraforming tech. etc?

We got plenty of people to spare. Take 50 million indians and 50 million chinese, they would hardly be missed.
