A Russian newspaper has warned that Russian President Vladmir Putin is playing an "astonishingly risky game" in the Syrian conflict that could even lead to a Third World War.

Popular tabloid, Moskovsky Komsomolets, ran an article that suggested hostilities in Syria could spark a “direct military confrontation" between the nations of a similar scale to the 1962 Cuban Missile Crisis.

Russian officials intensified their rhetoric over the Syria crisis Thursday, saying Moscow was stepping up cooperation with Iran and boosting its military presence in the eastern Mediterranean.

Those stories fit with Paul Craig Roberts' analysis of why Syria is so important to Russia and the U.S. (quoting from the video below starting at about 18:30). I'm sorry for the repetition of some of this, but sometimes repetition is justified.

"And so Washington's policy is to remove secular leaders so that the whole Middle East goes into chaos of sectarian conflict, the Shia and the Sunnis. And if the whole Middle East is in sectarian conflict, there's nobody to get in Israel's way. And this conflict, this jihadism can be spread into Iran, and the same thing achieved there. And then it can be spread into the Muslim areas of the Russian Federation and into the Muslim province of China, the province that borders Kyrgyzstan. And so this is Washington's policy for destabilizing Iran, Russia, and China."

Well if you know that the US is going to come at you sooner or later then maybe picking the time and place to do battle is important . China , Russia ,Iran ,Syria ,and even Turkey seems to be in Washington's cross hairs .

Shame the US citizens won't do anything to stop it- none of them want the war. Their government (my government) has gotten too big and is no longer in control by the people- yet it is the people who will suffer most from war.

WW3 started a long time ago. It's more subdued and not in your face as WW1 or WW2, making it go unnoticed for most people because they are too busy chasing pokemons.

How would citizens stop it? We have a say in nothing. Much less who we war with. Putting new people in seats of congress wouldn't change anything either. Always see people on here say that. What do you suggest we do?

The elite will do what they want. Thats been proven over and over. Realistically there is nothing a regular citizen can do is sit back, watch, and pray for the best.

There will be no uprising here. Even if there was. Put different people in power still get the same results.

As to Iran--Politcal, military, tech (including nuclear) and economic support (which helped to cusion sanctions by the West) via China have roots almost two decades deep. All of this while meeting to agree on China's future energy needs.

China has come veiw Iran also as an outlet to balance the West's domination of the Mid-East and to counter influence in the region.

Russia began talking military cooperation with Iran long before the January 2015 open agreements, tech etc. many years pror. Oddly, at the same time China began (in early 2015) to openly discuss hardend military ties. Similarly, Russia in talks with China prior for China's future enrgy needs.

Syria-Iran--Iran Supports Hezbollah which supports Assad as Iran also supports the Ba'athists; PFLP-GC, etal.

--Add that to the Russian naval base in Tartus and Khmeimim Air Base, now permanant, tip the balance a bit more in the Med. Russia is a strategic economic, political and military move.

That said, I see China as the economic engine driving the move(s) in search to secure it's energy needs. NOT Russia, follow the money and follow the oil. Russia and Iran could not move without money; nor could they move alone against the west.

Russia is the obvious choice to put out front, Iran is the obvious 'irriatating' mouth piece and knows the region.

China has procured Ecuador's oil (in 2010 over 2/3 of the oil was exported to China..not the U.S.), large commitments from Nigeria, Brazil, Iran, Iraq, Nepal etc. etc. etc. (not even getting into LNG) Add that to China land grabs all over Africa, South America...

China is the big silent partner. She wants the oil, LNG, land and merchant trading lanes.

Iran's bluster about 9mil men...good example as irratating. Fielding that many uniformed fighters is very expensive and can not be done over night.

What's your point? He's informing me at least.

The topic is the same because the war rhetoric gets stronger and stronger. The people who are saying things like "this will never happen" will be the first to wake up when the white hot flash occurs - which is looking increasingly likely.

The world is so fast paced now it's unbelievable and gone are the days of a six minute nuke warning. I don't think we'd have a warning at all......

The OP is doing us ALL a great service and instead of snide remarks, maybe, you should show a little gratitude.

my two solutions for the citizens to stop the war from happening. The problem is, everyone would have to be on board for this, or at least the majority of citizens.
1.) Everyone stop paying federal tax immediately. This would more than likely cripple the gov. financially more than they already are.
2.) A majority of the citizens to take back our country with a revolution, walk right up to the doors of capital hill, and physically throw all the goons out who are voting for war. Anything short of that will never work.

Well, the paper Moskovsky Komsomolets that made this report will most likely now be closed by the Russian authorities. The Russian press is mainly state run, or cowed into supporting the Kremlin. Journalists are harrassed and have been murdered in the past.
