The stark message came at the Association of the United States Army's annual meeting in Washington, where Milley remarked that America's "strategic resolve" and "alliances" are being "tested in ways that we haven't faced in many, many decades."

"I want to be clear to those who wish to do us harm… the United States military – despite all of our challenges, despite our [operational] tempo, despite everything we have been doing — we will stop you and we will beat you harder than you have ever been beaten before," he declared. "Make no mistake about that."

The consensus I've read is that this warning was aimed at Russia. What have we got here?

1. Russia is invited by Syria to protect the country.

2. Russia legally protects the Syrian government and promises to continue doing it.

3. The reaction of the U.S. military is the article linked above?

I think the "cooler heads will prevail" theory is going out the window. Remember what Russia's stance is:

Russia has warned citizens that a nuclear war with the West could be imminent - sparked by clashes in the Middle East.

Zvezda, a nationwide TV service run by the country’s Ministry of Defence, said last week, ‘Schizophrenics from America are sharpening nuclear weapons for Moscow.’

Russia doesn't seems to believe there are any "cooler heads" in the United States government right now. I think they know a lot more about the situation than any of us.

The article linked to at the top of this post doesn't sound the words of a "cooler head" to me.

That's awfully bold. I understand the U.S. Kind of corners the market in pure technological prowess, but I mean, nobody has EVER beaten Russia in a full war. War may have changed, we don't need boots. But I still say that's an awfully brazen thing to say.

The US Military will beat people "harder than ever" with less men and equipment than ever before in the past 70 years?

IIRC US Army rarely trains for operations above the battalion level.

Maybe if you're someone with only AKs and Pickup trucks operating in the Sahara Desert.

I dunno seems like flamboyant boasting.

You honestly think the USA can only beat people with AK's and pickups? Naive doesn't begin to describe that statement.

My bad, i'm sure they could beat some countries too.

Like Paraguay, or Rwanda.

The Invasion of Grenada was the greatest chapter in American Military History.

Your right look ay history, the vaunted US army can beat Granada, Panama, and other little pipsqueak countries but when it goes up against any great or medium great power it never has won.

Russia won WWII

The US was late in WWI

It was a draw in Korea

And they lost in Vietnam

Cant even beat the Taliban

Difference between losing and a stalemate partner. Russia outright lost against cavemen. The USA did work in Vietnam, before the public had enough. If we stayed and faught sure we could have won, but at what cost.

Grenada, what a weekend.

Why don't all parties just convene to the U.N and have an official 'Dick measuring' competition? Including that useless twat Fallon, the bloke is an absolute joke. From Energy minister to Defence minister, he's completely out of his depth.

I've enjoyed watching you make us all laugh at your version of history, Russian wins WWII, this is the best one yet.

Well, Nazi Germany fought a war of annihilation against the USSR. At the end of it the USSR was still there and stronger than ever before, while all of Germany was in ruins with Soviet soldiers in Berlin.

Doesn't take a massive leap of faith.

Really? Looks to me like South Vietnam ceased to exist entirely. The Socialist State remains to this day.

US Objective in Vietnam = failed.

Indeed. When we look at the US history at war over the last 70 odd years, it hasn't managed to beat anyone in war.

A bold, but impotent threat.

America was supplying the Afghanistan warlords with shoulder mounted missiles, can you imagine if Russia supplied the Talliban high tech equipment!

There still doing the same in Syria and for some reason Russia ignores the elephant in the room

The USSR won the war in Europe.

They over run the Germans on the Eastern Front and got to Berlin way before the U.S and U.K, because they got held up by counter attacks, which they found difficult to deal with.

I don't know what version of history you were told, but if you didn't know the USSR played the biggest part in defeating the Nazis, then you have been misinformed.

Russia was a huge turning factor in WWII,they beat the Germans back at an incredible loss of life to their own military

They caught the allies by surprise with the speed they picked up on the way to Berlin

This Army Chief rhetoric sounds like a 10yr old. My daddy can beat up your daddy or My Kung-Fu Is stronger than yours. But this of course develops into an arms race that can, and has, taken out entire planets and solar systems. Just look at Tabby.
