A point of clarification:
The United States is in fact the only nation which has used nuclear weapons against a sovereign nation. We dropped Fat Man and Little Boy on Hiroshima and Nagasaki at the end of World War II.

I suspect that is what odzeandennz is referring to.

A point in fact and agreed...yes the US did drop not one but two nuclear weapons.

Fact: Germany was developing the same weapons and transferred that intellegence to Japan.
You can bet you arse they would have been used against the allies, but they never got the chance in the end.

Fact: Civilian cities were not off the target list. (look at the bomimbg raids of the Axis historically) That is how war was waged until the UN intervention in Korea...many things chaged. 135,000 died in the fire bombing of Dresden...the school of thought "wipe them off them map"...and I agree.

Fact: The thought of the period was to end the war by any means necessary while saving lives of the allied nations. The two bombs did just exactly what Truman had expected.

How many millions would have died invading Honshu? How much would it cost over time?

The decision was made in a time of war and it was right. Or, please tell me in very explicit words with facts why that weapon should have been left on the table. Bothe were very small compared to today's weapons...very small...Just have the stigma of "Nuclear" or "Atomic"...it was and is a bomb...period.

If it were current day and I was asked, we can send your family members to a possible death in war or end it with bombing the hell out of them...I would say "bomb the hell out of them"

Nothing in war is PC and never will be, it's not sterile. Not like video games...nice try though

Sounds like a smart idea... doing drills, that is.

Think about it though.

Without readily available shelters which no one in this country has anymore, what would be the point of trying to have a drill? If you are in a major metro, you might as well simply drill to drop your head between your legs and kiss your butt goodbye.

A single bomb is perhaps survivable, but realistically if the US and Russia really threw down, no major metro is going to be hit by just one bomb.

Wasn't actually "trying" to state anything, actually. I understand Truman's decision and under no circumstances would I ever want to be in the same position he was in; that call took guts.

It wasn't clear to me from your response to odzeandennz what you meant about reviewing history. Did you not know about Hiroshima and Nagasaki? Apologies - should have asked first!

A single bomb is survivable, as long as you are either appropriately distanced from ground zero, or you have adequate shelter. Question is, would you want to survive?

However, all the major cities in the US would receive anywhere between 5 and 20 or so nuclear detonations, a few air-bursts to knock out general communications, and the rest all ground burst. Washington in particular would be utterly annihilated! With all the major cities gone, and government no longer in control across the whole of the US, I think you are guaranteed 90% fatalities from the initial detonations to many years after.

No police, no medical facilities, no emergency services of any kind to speak of, and the most horrendous and appalling experience of visceral horror and suffering imaginable to yourself and your loved ones. It is often stated that the living will envy the dead after a full scale nuclear war.

It goes without saying that Russia, too would be equally decimated. Here in Britain, we would cease to exist, as we would be carpet bombed with relatively few nuclear detonations, being of a compact size and all. Europe and Britain could easily be taken out with 500 nukes, which leaves 3,500 for America, which would be utter hell on earth!

One hopes that we are alarming ourselves needlessly, and that nuclear war won't come to pass, but, the way politicians are chaotically managing the world, one cannot fully state with confidence that it won't come to pass.

Both.

Obama has pushed the world to the brink of nuclear war.

For what? is the question of course.

Exactly right
The stupid western foreign policy probably has absolutely nothing to do with Obama though, it's the hidden puppet masters that are driving us towards war with Rusia. It's totally insane, just let the Russians have Syria and Ukraine and we can all live happily ever after.

MAD is a concept approaching 70 years of age.

Conventional thought is that cities, left in tact with respective populations...will starve-out within weeks.

Targeted areas are those which involve defense, retaliation, commerce (ports etc.) and the needed infrastructuer to support cities.

Wounding the enemy is far more costly (drains resources) to wit causes more stress on the agressor's/defender's ability to stay grouped.

Basically.

They say that Russia has built massive underground survival shelters that a portion of its urban population can attempt to ride out the worst years in.

We had civil defense shelters, but they would need some massive work to be restocked and supplied, and then you have the problem of surfacing in a radioactive wasteland. And that's assuming they hold out against bombardment of today's weapons.

The other problem we have is that the last of those who really witnessed global scale warfare are also dead or dying or so old that no one pays attention to them.

I have discovered that very few people have vivid enough imaginations to really contemplate what they have not really witnessed except in the extreme abstract.

God help us, but those are the people in power now. We're back in the age of "How could it be ... really?"

Yes very good point, those people who witnessed the horrors os WW2 are largely gone and the new breed seem overly eager to get it on. I can't believe what the eck is going on, all needed was to let the Ruskies have their natural backyard of the former Sovirt states, less the Baltics of course. They will never let Ukraine go to NATO/EU and all we had to do in the west was let them have it and a balance of power could be found, thus possibly allowing the two superpowers to join together and crush Islamo terror and keep the Chinese from taking over the globe. Its all totally insane..................... I don't want to die from nukes just so USA can add Kiev to its empire, let the ruskies have it, it was theirs anyway

I feel like people in the West are going to make a bigger deal about this than needed. The Russian economy is currently circling the drain. As long as Putin can reinforce the belief that all of Russia's woes are caused by the West instead of a corrupt government he can hold on to his power. Putin wants his people to fear the boogeyman he has created and believe that he's the only one that can protect them.

This is exactly what this is. Drumming up nationalist support. Well, also probably BS in terms of the numbers - 28% of the entire population is ridiculous. Vlad is trying to get the people scared and fired up.

If he doesn't pull something like this with his rapidly sinking economy, his favorably ratings (according to state-approved polls) are likely to plummet to as low as 100%.

RUSSIA is holding a massive evacuation drill for more than 40million people to prepare for nuclear war.

More than 200,000 emergency services personnel and soldiers will use 50,000 pieces of equipment during the massive civil defence exercise.

[...]

As international tension builds following attacks in Syria, Russian state officials are preparing terrified citizens for a nuclear war – which they say would be started by America.

Rus sia holds massive nuclear war exercise involving 40MILLION people as military tensions rise with US

Wow, what would this look like? 40 million people??

I really don't like the building tensions between the US and Russia. Its a bad endgame for the entire world to have these two saber rattling each other and throwing the "nuke" word around. I mean does Russia really think we would nuke them? Come on... I don't think anyone besides Iran, North Korea, or ISIS would be stupid enough to actually use one of those hell makers.

Fact - Japans surrender terms were to allow Japan to keep / hold its conquered territories and an end to the war.

If Japan didnt want to end the war losing they should never have attacked the US.

Obama's policies are leading to nuclear confrontation.
Hillary would be an extension of those policies with a we came we saw we kill kill kill attitude.

Time for some Trump to calm things back down with Russia, maybe go clean up some terrorist scum together.

The irony.. Putin goes on stating nations are allowed to align / ally themselves with whomever so long as its only with Russia.

Putin is a failed leader who is incapable of operating in the 21st century. To cover that up he lives in the 1980's.

if it weren't for the starch in his shirt Obama wouldnt be able to stand erect.

Maybe Russia should not have invaded Georgia or Ukraine or occupy territory in Moldova.

Contrary to the generalised attacks on Putin, the reality is that he has presided over the re-emergence of Russia on the international scene when everyone thought it was dead. Of course, Russia's ascendancy has been helped by the impossibly violent Obama administration in the USA.

Putin is very wise to put his nation through full nuclear drills ... especially after the recent less than veiled threats against Russian cities by a certain member of the Obama regime.

As a certain Russian economist put it, it is not the Nazis in Kyiv that are the problem but rather it is the Nazis in Washington that are the problem.

Thats the problem... Putin does not understand that he is the President of Russia. He thinks he is head of the Soviet Union and as such the re-emergence you speak of, like the soviet union, wont last.
