Program awards users points for flagging inappropriate content, writing captions and subtitles for videos

By Jonathan Ore, CBC News Posted: Sep 22, 2016 4:47 PM ET Last Updated: Sep 23, 2016 3:59 AM ET

YouTube is looking for "heroes" to help moderate its content and comments sections, but early feedback has been overwhelmingly negative with users describing it as crowdsourced censorship.

Users who join the Heroes program, which was announced Tuesday, will earn points for adding captions and subtitles to videos, flagging inappropriate videos and answering questions on the site's Help forum.

Accruing points will earn them privileges like joining video chats with others in the Heroes program, exclusive previews of upcoming product launches and the ability to flag abusive videos en masse instead of one at a time.

YouTube Heroes won't have direct moderation powers on their own, though. Anyone who watches a YouTube video can flag it as inappropriate, whether they're a regular user or a 'Hero.' However, YouTube employees ultimately make the final decision on what to do with content marked as inappropriate.

Users on YouTube made their voices heard almost immediately, with an overwhelming number of Dislikes on the announcement video. It currently has over 200,000 Dislikes compared to 3,000 Likes, after nearly 600,000 views.

Youtube is set to launch the "Heroes Program" to moderate, and delete videos and comments they find inappropriate, but this only seems to be a new way for youtube, and google to censor certain content they don't want.

Youtube is already known for censoring videos and comments including many videos that have for example showing violence on the part of certain sections of the population. Such as videos showing violence from newly Muslim immigrants in Europe, etc.

Influencers weigh in on YouTube's 'censorship' controversy

With a change in YouTube’s content moderation system, a tussle has broken out between the platform and a faction of its creators.

Controversy erupted last Wednesday, when YouTube creator Philip DeFranco — with 4.5 million subscribers on his channel — uploaded a video titledYouTube Is Shutting Down My Channel and I’m Not Sure What To Do in which he claimed flagged about 40 of his videos, citing some of his language and the topics he covers arenot advertiser friendly. He went on to describe the system as censorship with a different name.

YouTube responded that it had not updated any policies regarding which videos are ad-ready and which are not. It has merely changed the communication around it, sending creators a notice when they mark a video as unfriendly for advertisers. The platform also instituted a new appeals process. Still, the hashtag #YouTubeIsOver was trending on Twitter last week.

Also youtube is being demonetized.

Change to algorithm that selects advertiser-friendly videos creates controversy

By Ramona Pringle, CBC News Posted: Sep 12, 2016 5:00 AM ET Last Updated: Sep 12, 2016 5:00 AM ET

YouTube has informed content creators that they will no longer receive payments for videos it deems "unfriendly for advertisers."

Unsurprisingly, the creators whose revenue comes largely from advertisements on their videos are upset. But what does it mean for audiences, and the kinds of content you'll be seeing on YouTube?

"De-monetization" means YouTube decides which videos can collect ad revenue, based on whether they are deemed advertiser-friendly.

De-monetizing' YouTube: What does it mean you will see?

All of this is being announced before the internet itself is given to ICANN on Oct 1st, which in itself is controlled by the stakeholder community which includes many other governments, I wonder which ones, U.S. businesses, and other companies...

In fact, here is the testimony of ICANN's CEO and President Goran Marby, in which he states the bylaws which supposedly protect us from free speech censorship which govern ICANN can be changed by the people who are part of ICANN.

So it seems that ICANN, youtube, google etc, are making it easier and easier for them to not only completely control the internet, but censor anything, and anyone.

Welcome to the New World Order.

At some level the internet is going to have to be paid for so its not surprising. Google has moved from its startup mentality to that of an established company holding on to what its got. They paid alot of money for youtube, alot of the moonshots they have taken have not panned out, and now they are looking to maximize revenue streams.

While censorship is a conspiracy, I think in this case its simple money grabbing more than anything else.

Its not shocking that a crowd sourced moderation team is going to be agenda driven. Its basically wiki-video's at that point.

I made a thread about this earlier Here but I love the plethora of information you included in your topic. It's like something from the Soviet Union, essentially rewarding users for reporting on their neighbors by making them full-time unpaid employees of Google.

It's YouTube's disguise for mass censorship and the power they are giving these select individuals is going to be abused, mark my words.

Censorship is far from conspiracy.....wake up you fool.
It's been going on in Google searches such as them hiding unfavorable searches like the Clinton body count.

Also mass censorship on Facebook with f@ckerberg teaming up with he likes of Merkel to Censor anti immigration posts in Germany and also people having their accounts constantly messed with for having a conservative opinion.

There are also things like Milo getting his Twitter account shutdown purely for his anti establishment anti SJW rhetoric whilst flaming nut job Jihadists can post all types of crap without an eyelid getting batted.

Then there are the cases of Clinton expressing in her emails that Alt Right should not exist meaning she will wage war against the likes of the Drudge report,Breitbart and Infowars et al and shut them down.

Also throw in the censoring this week of Michael Savage who was lambasting Hilary Clinton about her health was taken off the air on the day of the Presidential election to be replaced by 2 left wing fairies with half the talent and a third of the audience.

The Chinese are imposing an internet credit based system whereby your good citizen score will effect every aspect of your life with bad scores for anti establishment dissidence and getting slammed for having friends that may express an anti Government narrative........and this is just the start when ICAAN takes over and the nutters like China and Saudi Arabia get to input their totalitarian despot policies into the fold then you can see the OP has a very valid point.
