On the heels of a US airstrike which killed a reported 62 solidiers at a Syrian military base in Deir el-Zour, US officials are blaming the Russians for an airstrike which targetted an aid convoy destined for Aleppo. The airstrike on the Syrian military base was described by the Obama administration as "regretful" and one that was not objected to by the Russians beforehand despite them being informed of US plans.

The Russians called the airstrike "serious and blatant attack on Syria and its military" and "firm proof of the U.S. support of Daesh."

Now it looks like the Russians have got their own mess on their hands, one that Stephen O’Brien, UN emergency relief coordinator characterized as a potential war crime if the strike is found to be deliberate.

US blames Russia after UN aid convoy in Syria targeted by air attack

A UN aid convoy delivering food relief to a rebel-held area near Aleppo was targeted in an airstrike, as a week-old ceasefire brokered by Russia and the US collapsed with a new surge of Syrian government bombing.

The US said it blamed Russia for the attack on the convoy, whether or not Russian planes were involved, arguing Moscow was responsible under the ceasefire agreement for reining in Bashar al-Assad’s government forces.

The attack on the convoy, made up of Syrian Red Crescent trucks carrying UN-supplied food, was reported to have killed at least 12 people and destroyed 18 trucks laden with food intended for tens of thousands of people cut off by the war in a rural area west of Aleppo city.

Aid officials said it was hit from the air while unloading food at a warehouse in opposition controlled Urem al-Kubra. Early reports suggested most of the dead were Syrian Red Crescent drivers.

Statements from John Kirby:

The US state department spokesman John Kirby said in a statement: “The destination of this convoy was known to the Syrian regime and the Russian federation and yet these aid workers were killed in their attempt to provide relief to the Syrian people.”

“We don’t know at this point whether it was the Russians or the regime. In either case, the Russians have the responsibility certainly to restrain – refrain from taking such action themselves, but they also have the responsibility to keep the regime from doing it,” the official said.

Russian officials are denying the claims, saying that video of the 18 (out of a convoy of 31) destroyed trucks shows damage not caused by an airstrike or "any sort of munitions."

nstead, the fire that tore through the convoy happened "strangely at the same time insurgents were carrying out a large-scale attack on Aleppo," Konashenkov said.

Washington expressed outrage over the attack, stressing that the convoy's destination was known to both Damascus and Moscow. Konashenkov said Russian drones had followed the convoy until it successfully delivered its load, but had stopped surveillance after that. "All information on the convoy's location (after that) was known only to the rebels controlling this area," he said

The convoy was hit just hours after the end of the week-long ceasefire. UN aid convoys have been suspended.

Actually sounds like a tit for tat.

All UN aid convoys should have a Syrian and/or Russian escort, to ensure they reach the correct destination and to ensure they aren't false vehicles used in a CIA op to arm the Islamists. That way stuff like this won't happen again.

More realsitic scenario is some of these vehicles were munitions that accidentally exploded. They were destined to resupply the moderate rebels during the cease fire because.... isnt that what a cease fire is all about?

Well according to the Russians, they had drones following it right up until they didn't and then *something* happened which sounds just about as suspicious as a cop's bodycam having a "fault" right before an unarmed person is shot.

The obvious implications here are that destroying the UN aid convoy benefits the Assad regime but the counter is that it was either purposefully destroyed by the US/allies or was destroyed by ISIS and is being used to detract from last week's airstrike on the military base.

Of course, the mega-conspiracy might be that the Russians let the military base be struck (they didn't object when the US made known their intentions) and then in addition to using it to smear the US, are attempting to use it to get a "pass" on striking this convoy.

Yes, this is what a ceasefire is all about.

Now it's ended, let the proxy war re-commence.

Never heard of Daesh until the U.K Parliament voted against military intervention in Syria the first time. All of a sudden a new bogey man appears beheading ordinary Joe. It's not politicians, it's not rich globalist scum, it's not those at the top of banking pyramid who, despite creating a massive economic crisis, have become richer as a result.

Yeah, we have a front seat view of just WTF is going on, and it's probably going to get that little bit more fraught, but that's brinkmanship for you.

Hmmmm...

Maybe they knew more than the UN and Uncle Sam are letting us know about. Due to the fact that the anti assad alliance from the West has been providing ISIS with funds, logistics, air support and funding it's not too far fetched that this convoy was a weapons shipment to the "moderate rebels" who accidentally behead children, it was a mistake they said.

I'm speculating but wouldn't be surprised if I was bang on.

Question everything.

It would just have to be a Syrian branch of the UN delivering life saving supplies wouldn't it. I'm surprised they never just told the truth in that it was the Russians that bombed Spastics in Wheelschairs delivering early Christmas presents to the baby Jesus.

What difference does this make to the ceasefire idea. Great Britain along with Norway and the USA murdered in cold blood 70 Syrian military personnel yesterday, that is a war crime for sure nd Syria's government has every right to declare was for this attrocious act of violence within their own borders. We used to ship in Chechends and Tunisian mercenaries to go kill quarter f a million Syrian people, now our government are beginning to do the dirty work themselves

Another day, another Russian war crime. They have no respect for human life. When will the war criminal and mass murderer Vladimir Putin be brought to justice?

Saw the Sputnik article. While i believe Sputnik to be a trash rag run by Russian government, it's still alarming if there is a grain of truth to it.

Very interesting that the Russians claim to have drone footage of it all UNTIL the actual attack.

Suspicious much?

I wouldnt put it passed Erdolf to be messing the truce either. Just to keep the chaos going and assad as weak as possible keep the kurds from setting up.

Interesting take on this.

You suspect the Turks then I'd assume?
