CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Mayor Jennifer Roberts quickly shot down on Monday any attempt to predicate a repeal of a state law many find discriminatory on the repeal of a Charlotte ordinance. Legislative leaders over the weekend said they believe there is enough support in the House and the Senate to roll back House Bill 2 if Charlotte first rescinds a local law that requires businesses to allow transgender individuals to use the bathroom of their choosing. Lawmakers passed House Bill 2 in a one-day emergency session in March to void Charlotte's ordinance, but the state law went further to exclude gay and transgender people from protections against discrimination. The state law has created a nationwide backlash with entertainers canceling concerts, organizations shifting their conventions to sites outside North Carolina and the NBA, the NCAA and the ACC all moving sporting events from the state. The law is widely unpopular statewide and has become a drag on Gov. Pat McCrory's re-election campaign, according to the results of an Elon University Poll released Monday. HB2 has likely sunk Pat McCrory's chances for re-election. But his stance on the issue remains the same. The entire reason for HB2 was because a Charlotte ordinance was created allowing people of any gender to use any bathroom. If Charlotte was to repeal their ordinance, the repeal of HB2 would be easy and maybe NC could get back to dealing with real problems that affect real people.

The ball is in Charlotte's court now. At least it can be seen for what it really is. And I am proud of Gov. McCrory for sticking to his guns. I hate that NC lost so much revenue because of it, but you can't bake a cake without breaking a few eggs.

Not an opinion on HB2 at all - Roberts is an idiot. The sad thing is that people won't see it for what it is. She and the town council members have both given interviews saying they don't see any point in rescinding the ordinance because HB2 overrules it anyway. They simply want HB2 repealed and their ordinance left on the books.

They're completely ignoring the fact that the entire genesis to HB2 is that the council passed an ordinance that is outside their power to pass, at least according to how the legislature views it.

that is exactly how it is. Like I said, it might ruin Pat in politics, but he didn't flip, didn't cave in, and didn't wimp out. Huge respect for him on that. Now at least it will be easier to see the root of all this.
