The Departed (2006) and Street Kings (2008) are my favorites in this genre. I feel like both films are brutally honest about the underworld. The Departed is told from the point of view of organized crime. Street Kings is told from the point of view of crime fighters. I believe if you take those two films together with The Firm (1993) (I don't consider that to be a crime film or I would include it in my list), you'll have a good understanding of how the world (matrix system) works overall.

While i could pick movies all day long the two that popped up first that went mentioned yet are:

L.A. Confidential (1997) IMDB

Early 1950s thriller about corruption in media and police force, excellently directed and great plot backed by solid passionate acting by all involved. Special mention to actor Guy Pearce who does a particularly good job.

The Usual Suspects (1995) IMDB

Cant say too much about this movie as the plot is what makes this movie, a must watch - again excellently directed and exceptional casting with amazing performances from all. Special mention to writer Christopher McQuarrie for just a fantastic twisted plot.

Like i said there just so many great movies out there that have to be seen along this genre i wont get greedy and list everything i can think of, im sure fellow ATS's will get there - great idea for a thread OPer.

"The Usual Suspects" and "Street Kings" are 2 favorites. Here are a couple that I also like:

"Ronin" - a movie about a group of guys hired to steal a briefcase from another group of guys. Its a really great movie but it has an unfortunate title which did not attract moviegoers.

and the remake of "Ocean's 11"

"Thunderheart" is another good one.

I might concede Oceans to you (but how do you not include the Rat Pack?), but Last Man Standing is a Mob movie about territory.

Good post topic. Great mentions of Ronin, The Usual Suspects, and The Raid: Redemption. Ditto Reservoir Dogs/True Romance... would Pulp Fiction count? A lot of different crime going on in that movie. All the above are favorites of mine.

A couple additions-

Michael Mann's 'Heat', fantastic epic crime film w many great actors, and in my personal top 3 films of all time.

And 'Snatch'. Enough said.

Gangster Squad

The Iceman

Heat (Heist film ? I'd still class Heist under crime)

The Untouchables

And Leon

To me one of the best crime movies is Reservoir Dogs (mentioned previously)

It's Tarantino when he was hitting his peak..

Biigs beat me to LA Confidential. Not only a good crime movie but a damn good movie period. Some older ones that were big. The French Connection. Bullit. Freebie and the Bean was cute as hell.

ETA: What about the first 2 Dirty Harry movies?
