Senior Shiite political leader Abdel Aziz Hakim said the attack was the latest salvo by extremists trying to stoke civil war between Shiites and Sunnis in the run-up to the country's elections.

"It is quite obvious why there is such an attack. They are trying to create sectarian strife," he said.

The attack confirmed fears of Sunni Arab insurgents escalating their campaign against Shiites, who are expected to carry the January 30 general elections largely being boycotted by the Sunnis.

And all this before the election(s). I can't begin to imagine the civil tension after the election(s).
What a disaster Iraq has become.

There was another car bomb at a wedding party:

When was the last day without a car bomb in Iraq?
There seems to be at least one every day.
