Launched in 1982 by the French Ministry for culture, the FÊTE DE LA MUSIQUE is held in more than hundred countries in Europe and over the world on
every 21st June, the day of the summer solstice on the northern hemisphere.
Completely different from a music festival, the Fête de la Musique is above else a free popular party, open to any participant (amateur or
professional) who wants to perform in it.
It brings together all styles of music and targets the whole population, aiming to popularise musical practice and acquaint the young and the not so
young from all social backgrounds with all forms of musical expression. It gives the opportunity for the people to communicate with each other through
the music.
The musicians are asked to perform for free, and all the concerts are free for the public. Hence the reason why their preferred locations include the
open-air, streets, parks, courtyards, museums, castles, etc. Furthermore, the Fête de la Musique is an opportunity to encourage the major music
institutions (orchestra, operas, choirs, etc.) to perform outside their usual locations, or, on the contrary, for them to welcome other styles of
music.
In this way it offers an opportunity to develop exchanges between city centres and their outlying areas, to offer concerts in hospitals or in prisons,
to promote encounters and exchanges between young musicians and new talents.
European music party :
Year after year, more and more participants all around the world have been seduced by the principles of the Fête de la Musique. Beyond the impulse and
the dynamism of the French cultural network abroad (embassies, Centres and Instituts Culturels Français and Alliances Françaises) who has contributed
to this international development, a lot of events are now set up by local organisers (Ministries for Culture, City Councils, local artistic
associations, etc.). The Fête de la Musique has been invented again and again, taking care of each country cultural specificities, to the point of
becoming an international musical emblematic event.

International music party :
The Fête de la Musique itself invites to travel and to meet different people and cultures. France is since many years one of the best place for the
“international sound system” and the Fête de la Musique takes part of it by highlighting world music and cultural exchanges, giving opportunities to
original matches : polyphonies, traditional musics, world music, with the participation of all the different foreigners communities living in
France...
