The last man on earth sat quietly in a room. There was a knock at the door.

3 years late but I believe this was derived from a story by Thomas Bailey Aldrich. This story is used for college analysis.

"A woman is sitting in her old, shuttered house. She knows that she is alone in the whole world; every other thing is dead.
The doorbell rings."
