"Federal Attorney-General Philip Ruddock says the Government has taken into account privacy issues when developing a new system to identify fraudulent documentation.

Mr Ruddock says the system can not be compared to the failed Australia Card, and will not involve a single number to identify Australians."

What's wrong with an ID? Well ok how's this sound. You have ONE card, which holds medical records, bank accounts details, tax file number, birth certificate details, address, phone number etc etc...now what happens if that card gets stolen? It would put a whole new meaning to identity theft.

If there's a plastic card, there will be machines capable of reading it. If there are machines capable of reading id cards, there will be people capable of stealing or duplicating those machines. If people steal of duplicate those machines, whoops, goodbye privacy.....

You are right LordGoofus, we need to skip the plastic cards and move to the subcautanious ID chips and the explosive necklaces right away....

The national ID card was voted against in a referrendum around 15 years ago. I doubt we'll see anything of the sort again, nor do we need it.

thanks,
