I tried to write a song today

I tried to write a song today, but the melody wouldn't come to play,
Instead I wrote this poem for you and everything you do;

For me, the words come easily, they convey how I feel and not taken lightly,
Hope only and not required they are reciprocated and conjugated;

You inspire me, you hold me to a higher standard of giving and living,
I strive to be you and all you are, reaching for that farthest star;

In the face of defeat and agonizing conditions, you stand tall, refusing to fall,
With strength and wisdom you humbly accept your place with grace;

You take no comfort in winning because of the anguish of your opponent,
Instead you hold out your hand and offer condolences with humility;

If there are angels that walk this Earth, you surely are one to emulate,
I want nothing but the best and you I adore, in this life to come and many more.
