The Center for Security Policy, in my opinion a faux think thank, has been ranting about the Spratly and another chain for years. Their research is pretty biased, but to their credit, at least they are addressing the issue. I'm just giving the reader a heads up that these guys aren't Brookings or RAND. You can't swing a dead cat in DC without it hitting a think tank.

I haven't gone Google Earth surfing, but the big deal are the runways from a strategic view. Legally, using fill to "enhance" the islands is very forbidden. There was some recon video a few months ago from an US jet flying over one of these enhanced islands where the PLA comes up on guard and tells them to scoot.

Clearly they are in the beginning phases of genetically enhancing great white sharks to become smarter and attack the enemy.
