Every time this thread comes up I have to give the same answer:

Oddworld.

(you know, the 2D era.)

This had everything that made a brilliant game:

1) stunning artwork and visuals

2) entertaining and addictive gameplay

3) captivating story

4) challenge that tests your button-combo skills as well as puzzle-solving

I saved em all

on both (2D) games.

The 3D engine killed this franchise, and most of gaming in my opinion.

I love how all of us cherish different games. This is a trip back to memory lane. Love my gamer days.

I got some here for each genre

RPG: Breath of Fire 3 specifically, but they were all great!

Action Flying : Nuclear strike, and the whole Strike series. It needs a comeback

Action Cars : Twisted Metal 2. The best of all.

Strategy : Red Alert 1/Warcraft 2 (tie for me)

FPS : OG Doom of course

Some notably older, obvious, and unknown titles.
Mario Brothers 1,2 and 3
Genesis Sonic
Gameboy Zelda the seashells
Out of this World
Earthworm Jim.
Gauntlet series

Oh dayum Twisted Metal 2!

Did you ever play Rogue Trip?

It's my favorite of the genre. Actually made by the same group that did Twisted Metal 1 and 2, released around the same time as 2.

It's the same style of game but a step up...coulda been Twisted 3.

Played the hell outta this one.

My favorite game of all time would probably be Tomba, im 22 so when I consider a actual understanding how games really works i wouldn't think of snes or sega i was too young to really say those were great games but i did play those systems. but i would pick ps1 as the system that really made me say "wow! video games are awesome!"

As of right now. I would say the New DOOM for xbox1 is pretty legit. I hate FPS games where you die in one hit, to me that doesnt take as much skill and being able to take alot of damage and still be able to out manuever a enemy.

I grew up on the cusp of NES and Genesis era. I would say the PS1 and N64 were the tail-end of the golden age of gaming.

PS1 was definitely a happy memory of my childhood.

Better game than Twisted Metal 2, less notoriety

(For the record, I adore Twisted 1 and 2. Twisted Metal was one of the first games I ever owned on PS1, along with Tomb Raider and Mortal Kombat Trilogy.)

I guess I'm a bit too old skool. I couldn't stand that one.

Remember, I grew up playing Mario bros. and Pac-Man

I have a certain nostalgia for the days when a game meant you were a little yellow circle eating little white dots

I remember we rented rogue Trip at Blockbuster, but I preferred Twisted Metal 2 myself. The first game I played on PS1 though was the one my brother got with his PlayStation for his bday.

But the first game I had my mom buy me at Service Merchandise with my allowance and bday money later that year was Resident Evil 1 : Directors cut. It was awesome. Then I really enjoyed Silent Hill, that really upped the ante on terror.

Black was definitely the Second Best by far. But TM2 is # 1

Todays games are for pussies!! With your infinity regen health, and some plentiful ammo. Try that # on Contra or doom without cheats though!! I always like those games that killed you off in one hit. You #ing had to have serious conviction to conquer the game.
