What he should have done is probably gracefully refused to accept it but doing that Trump probably felt might insult the guy.

It's not my place to answer that question because it wasn't my Purple Heart. You should go ask the person who gave it away, or just read/listen what the Lt Colonel said in the interview.

The Purple Heart is an award (like all other military awards) rendered for a specific reason. It's simply not a tangible thing you can give away. Trump didn't earn the award so he is not a Purple Heart recipient. It wouldn't have been the Lieutenant Colonel's first rodeo and he knew what he was doing was a hollow gesture. That is why active duty personnel have many many restrictions placed on their participation in political events.

What happened was ... the guy gave Trump his medal. He can replace that ... no problem ... no one would be the wiser. All he has to do is send off for a replacement and the government will send one in the mail with his name engraved on it. If he wanted to ... he could go to the Clothing Sales store and simply buy another one. The Lieutenant Colonel was acting like a

Me? All of that crap went straight into the trash. The only thing the military gave me that I had any interest in keeping is a DD From 2 and a DD Form 214.

Trump was kidding...The whole point of the thread which has been twisted into something so ugly is that VET thought enough about what Trump had to say and about the direction he felt Trump will lead this country, that he offered up the most personal precious thing he could!

It is not about the dollar amount that the medal is worth it is about the sentimental value it holds for the VET! Why am i having to explain something that is deliberately being rebuked as something awful!

And just because your purple heart has no special meaning for you I am quite sure that for some it holds a lot of personal value.....Thank you for your service and my freedom.....

That is an awful way to say he did something really wrong and "didn't mean it that way" - IF he becomes president, every single word of him will be weighed and will have extreme effect to economy, politics and so on OVER THE WORLD. There will be no more "he was just kidding", that does not fly with other professional politicians (or diplomats, or politicians from countries which are not the US's friends).
