It's not even so much the length of life as it is the quality. I was out and about today and saw a woman probably my mom's age (mid-70s) - she was using a cane and was struggling to walk. I could tell she was in pain. She was overweight, and I could smell cigarette smoke on her. My mom has never smoked, exercises regularly, keeps her weight reasonably maintained with a healthy diet- and she could run circles around this other woman with no pain at all.

If I had to choose between living an unhealthy life and being tired and miserable during my remaining years or living a healthy life and being fairly energetic and pretty much pain-free during my remaining years, I know which one I'd choose....

Ever think that maybe the pain is keeping her from being able to exercise?

To be serious for "just" a moment;
It's kind of you to say.

Thank you.

I'll get by for a few more years, but there comes a time when you have to choose. I choose being happy, laughing, and enjoying life.

But thank you all the same.

Nope. I think lack of activity has eroded her muscles and weight gain has put so much pressure on her joints to the point she can't move easily. I've seen it happen to too many others, including some relatives of mine. I've seen just the opposite with people like my mom who has always been active and careful what she eats. My mom's sister used to be as thin and active as my mom in her younger years, but she ate too much of the wrong stuff and stopped healthy activity. She now has lots of health problems and bad knees, bad back, etc., etc. The bad lifestyle came before the bad knees/back.

Well, you are a cantankerous old bunny - uh, I mean cat or whatever your avatar is - but I don't want you to suffer in your old age.

In other words you are judging her by what YOU think is the problem. I can tell from experience that there are disabilities that stop you from doing much of anything. Even sitting at the comp for too long and I can be in bed for days. Yes, I use a cane too. I sure as hell miss golf, bowling, hell, everything. I used to love to dance. So back that up a bit. You DON'T know.

Yeah...I hate when people litter. People must think (wrongly) that throwing butts doesn't equate throwing other trash. I see people flick cigarette butts out of cars all the time but rarely see people do it with trash. Although, a few weeks ago, I saw someone throw an astronomical amount of trash out of their car window while on the highway. I was shocked. I was like, "Who still litters?'. Then I was thinking how that could have possibly caused an accident. But about the butts.. I don't like it either. I was walking my dogs and boyfriend at the park on Sunday. It's a nice park with a little cave and a waterfall. As I'm walking down the stairs to the waterfall, there sits a huge pile of butts on a rock. It just kills the mood a little. I don't think it's a huge issue but definitely annoying.

What type of collar do you use on them?

The dogs get harnesses but my boyfriend gets neither harness nor collar. He's easier to control.

Do you use hand signals or spoken commands?

I had to go to the mall today. I hate going there, it's a cess pool (just my opinion). As I walked to the doors, there was a woman with two young kids talking with someone from the malls administration. Apparently, from what I heard, her kids got cigarette butts on their feet while walking into the entrance.

This is kind of a 50/50 split between smokers throwing their cigarette butts anywhere they feel like, and the mall staff not keeping up on cleaning. It's still so disgusting. Some malls might not have receptacles for butts, but this mall does! Just put out your cigarette in the right place so they don't end up on the feet of literally the 90% of people who are wearing sandals in the summer time.

Gross.

Why isn't anyone concerned these kids don't have shoes on in a very public place...ewww!!

I smoke and my butts go in the trash or stay with me. I ask other smokers that do that if they throw their butts out on their carpet.

I have to say that I find children worse than cigarettes or cigarette buds. I absolutely hate being somewhere quiet and a horde of children comes along and screams or runs around and takes over the place of tranquility.
However people with children are selfrighteous. There is nothing you can say against this nuisance, because children are involved and if you don't like those little critters, YOU are the evil one.

Children are everywhere, once I was in a pub, dressed to the hilt, getting drunk and having adult conversations, when a middleclass family came in after 10 p.m and gave their already hyper kids coke to drink. They then ran around like headless chickens, using my short skirt to grab onto, whilst playing hide and seek amongst the drunken crowd. Nowhere is safe [maybe in a porn cinema].

I mention the above to give some perspective. I grew up with smoking parents, so what? I smoke rarely now and don't litter if there is a receptacle. However, in olden days, us smokers were allowed to stay inside a warm pub during the winter month, engage in interesting conversations with our friends, whilst having a pint and a ciggie. Most importantly, there were ashtrays on the table [so no need to throw the buds on the floor]. Now we are treated like lepers, have to leave the table and fetch our coats and freeze. But mind you, I made a lot of friends 'outside' the pub. When you are oppressed by nancies you somehow stick together.

So after you have told us that we are worthless scum who deserves all the bad things you can come up with, I just wanted to point out, that small pieces of paper with plant material in themare not even on my radar as annoying. However your offspring is.

I'd love for restaurants to ban children, make families eat outside [especially in the winter] and then have a sneer and an insult ready when I walk past them. Don't hire anybody with children and don't give them any life insurance [stress]. At the doctors, all your illnesses should be diagnosed as the result of having children whilst ignoring all other causes [stress]. Oh and hike up the prices for everything child related by 250%. The places you will be allowed to go with your children will be grotty and depressing so as to mark your disgusting status as parents and to make you feel really scummy.

And before you say that smoking is self inflicted...so is having children. And if you say children are necessary for our future and cigarettes are not...that is an entirely relative kind of opinion. I personally can do without more humans on this planet.

We know for a fact that the obesity rate, at least in America, is very high. We know for a fact that most of this population eats too much processed food, fast food, restaurant food, etc. We know for a fact that most of this population isn't very active, with desk jobs, cars to take us everywhere, and all the other modern conveniences that keep us from moving our bodies very much. We know that heart disease, diabetes and cancer are the top killers of this population, and we know how bad eating, low activity and other unhealthy habits (smoking) contribute to that.

So, it's a bit disingenuous to assume that every overweight person out there just has a "gland problem", or that every person with a cane has a disability that didn't have anything to do with an unhealthy lifestyle. The odds are MUCH more in favor of it being the result of all the stuff in my first paragraph.

What's disingenuous is people putting their spin on an issue one has no right to. That's between the patient and the doc.

It's just quite funny how every overweight person just happens to have a slow metabolism, or a medical reason why they are fat. Most of them are fat because of poor diet and lack of exercise. But you rarely hear any of them admit this. I understand Kayla's point. And she's right.

I'm disabled. I'm 5' 10" 185. That's not overweight. I just have no mobility. My doc concurs. Do you doc's have the same experience with this? Or is it just further putting other down to make one's crappy life look better to themselves?

Did I mention you directly? Or are you just saying this to get sympathy from us?

You being disabled has no relevance to our point. Which I cannot fathom how you can argue against. And that is that America is full of self inflicted overweight and unfit people. You are not one of them, ok...and?

Sympathy is in the dictionary between # and Sisyphus. I don't any of it.

Just pointing ot that people that feel morally superior are continually degrading other by thrir standards to make themselves feel better. The same goes for smokers. Or should I say "targets"?

I would suggest that fit, healthy eating, no smokers have a right to feel slightly superior in this respect. I'm not saying that people should put others down, but quietly....yes feel better than those who let themselves slip health wise. You are not one of those, ok, fine..but most are not.
