The Danger of Replacing Fear with Love

I have watched the most of the DNC convention and much of the media coverage of it, and a theme has popped up that I find puzzling. This is the idea that Trump is selling fear, and all we need to conquer all of the problems that he mentions is to have more love. This was the central theme of Obama’s speech, and many of the other speakers have also used this line. There are three major problems I have with this. The first problem is that many of these speakers say this, and then hypocritically spread fear, the second is that they are basically calling anyone who may have a legitimate fear a coward, and lastly they are endangering us all by not allowing us to prepare and deal with real threats.

Hypocritical fear spreading

We are told that this is a country of love, not fear. However, we are the bombarded with messages of fear. I am going to go through a few of them here.
Climate Change- they had Hollywood directors actually make films showing us how catastrophic it will be if we don’t adopt Hillary’s policies. Stars warned us of the upcoming doom, and speakers mocked and called dangerous those who disagreed with them, which is exactly the sort of behavior that they criticize Trump for.

Treatment of immigrants- they brought out illegal immigrants and family members to spread gloom about what would happen to their families, letting us know the damage that would be wrought if our country enforced its laws. Then legal immigrants came on to express their fear about how Trump hated them, and how bad it would be for them, even though Trump has not once impugned legal immigrants.

Treatment of blacks- Obama and others repeatedly talked about the fear that black youth have of violence when they leave the house. Why don’t they just replace that fear with love?

Gun violence- This was brought up over and over. Guns will tear us all apart and the violence is crippling. If we don’t adopt Hillary’s policies more innocents will die. This fear mongering is especially egregious because the same people saying this are also the ones saying how crime and violence are at all-time lows.

Russia- many Trump opponents say that he is dangerous because he will provoke our enemies to attack us. Yet the DNC and media all week has fear mongered about Russia. Before any facts were in at all, they accused Russia of hacking the emails, and they spread fear about what an evil dictator Putin is, and how Trump may work with him. This is exactly the type of rhetoric they would call Trump a fear monger for.

The wealthy- Trump is wealthy, and they claim all wealthy people are greedy jerks that will take all of our money. They think that wealthy people can’t be trusted (except Bloomberg, all of the DNC celebrities, and the incredibly wealthy Democrat politicians). They think it is ok to homogenize all of the wealthy, and to dehumanize them, and to suggest they should have to pay for almost everything. Ironic how they can lump people together like this and it is not considered prejudice.

Trump is evil- they attack Trump with hatred and vitriol. They constantly preach the message of how we have to fight for this election. They mock Trump and claim he is evil. Yet they claim that we must treat a group like ISIS with love. It is very telling that they love a group that is killing innocent people all around the globe, but they HATE their political opposition.

There were others, but this shows how hypocritical this message of not voting based on fear is.

The Mocking of Fear

The message that continually comes through is that if you have fear, then you are un-American. Apparently, America was founded on love not fear. Remember when the founding fathers delivered flowers to the British, and loved them right out of the country? Remember when we loved Adolph Hitler out of power?

People have legitimate fears in their life, fear of illness, fear of losing a job, fear of terrorism, etc. The DNC mocks this, and basically calls anyone with these reasonable fears a coward. Remember, this country was founded on love, so if you have fear, you are not acting American. These are the same people that would lose it if you claim someone is un-American. If someone not in the DNC says it, they are a bigot, but it just fine for them to do it.

So remember, if you fear ISIS, or losing your job to an illegal immigrant, you are a coward that is going against the American way. But if you fear the police, guns, or climate change, you are a great American.

The Danger of Solving Problems with Love

So the answer that is given by the DNC is that we shouldn’t fear things in life, but should instead love them. The message is simple, the world needs more love, and if we had that love, all of our problems would be solved. They contend that it would be impossible to solve any problems with fear, and by having that fear we make hatred and violence inevitable (except the fear they believe in I guess). This is the sort of utopian fantasy that leads to the destruction of civilization. Combine this with Obama and others declaration of how the US is the greatest country in the world. Why would we need to fear anything, we are the greatest? This sort of hubris is dangerous and keeps us from preparing for real threats. Let’s go through a list of some of the problems Trump identified in his speech that was considered fear mongering, and see how love could solve these issues.

Economy- to bring up problems in the economy is fear mongering. We can debate the economic numbers all day, but in the end what really matters here is if people think the economy working for them. A huge percentage of people are unhappy with the economy, particularly people in the middle or lower class. To bring this up according to the Hillary people is fear mongering. You are not allowed to focus on people that are upset that they lost their job, or to show numbers that Obama has been bad for the middle class and minorities, or mention that he has almost doubled the national debt. All of this is fear mongering. Now granted, it was alright when Obama ran on a platform in 2008 of criticizing Bush’s economy (rightfully so in my opinion), but 8 years later it is now only a hate monger that would do such a thing.

If your wages are stagnating, if you have lost your job and are so upset that you are no longer even looking for one, all you need to do is have more love. Let your children know that there will be no dinner on the table, no roof over their head, but all of those things are unnecessary, because the can fill up on love.

Only that won’t work. In the real world, we have to be able to identify problems to be able to fix them. Talking about how the economy has failed people isn’t fear mongering, it’s the truth. Would Obama also claim the Bernie supporters are fear mongering about the economy? Of course not. Economic policy can’t be changed by love, people need jobs and money in their pockets. To try to stop this debate from happening because it is fear mongering dooms the people that are in a bad spot to never being able to get out of it.

Immigration- everyone seems to think that there needs to be immigration reform, or there will be dire consequences. The difference is, when the Hillary people say this it is a prudent suggestion, but if you are not one of them, you are a tyrannical fear monger. The fact is that our immigration system is broken, and illegal immigrants coming to this country is seen as a large problem to many people. This is why Trump garnered much of his success, because many people are upset about illegal immigration and no one in either party was doing anything about it. The Hillary people are outraged that over 80% of the women crossing the border illegally are raped, but to call illegals rapist makes you a racist bigot. (On a side note, it is ok to make up stats that one in five women are raped on college campuses as long as you are impugning white men).

If your job has been taken by an illegal immigrant, if you have been hurt by an illegal that is constantly released, if you are concerned about terrorists or drug cartels being able to come through are unprotected border, you just need to love illegals more. In fact, having a border at all is a sign of hate. We need to invite anyone in the entire world in who wants to come, that is the American way.

This is where love will get us, no borders, and a flood of people that we will inevitably not be able to take care of. Where are these elite politicians love for illegals in their personal lives? Why are the smug celebrities that are calling anyone who wants a border hateful living in gated neighborhoods? Most of them have multiple houses, why can’t they move illegals into those houses they aren’t using? At some point, even the open border people would see that our country wouldn’t be able to sustain an unlimited population. What would they do then? According to them, to turn anyone, and I do mean anyone, away would be acting out of fear. And so our love will lead the collapse of America.

Instead of just using love, we must look at the consequences of not enforcing our borders, and come up with a plan to deal with it. Yes, that may mean building a wall to keep people out. This is not hate, it is practicality. To leave everyone in would be bad not just for us, but all of the immigrants, as they would quickly have no resources either. Empty platitudes about building bridges not walls may feel warm and fuzzy, but it does nothing in the real world. Not to mention that unlimited immigration can lead to the erosion of culture, which I will get to later.

Veterans health- it’s no secret that the VA is in shambles. Veterans that we asked to risk their lives for the country are treated like garbage when it comes to their health care. More veterans have committed suicide than have died in Iraq and Afghanistan. However, talking about this is fear mongering, because it implies that the great Obama had something go wrong.

We need to tell these vets to stop worrying about their mental or physical health. They don’t need medicine or surgery or to talk to someone, they just need to love more. If your back feels like it is killing you, just try loving it. If you have nightmares about the conflict you were involved in, just love more. In fact, love the enemies that you were fighting, that will heal you even faster.

This is another example of how ridiculous this idea of love solving everything is. It is not fear to mention the dismal conditions that this administration has left the VA in, it is reality. If we brush concerns off as fear mongering, then nothing will change. We see that this is exactly what happened with the Obama administration. The scandal broke, and Obama didn’t want to spread too much fear, and so what has been the result? Almost no positive changes to the VA or veterans’ health.

Violent crime and police interactions- it seems like race relations are at an all-time low in recent history. Black lives matter feels race relations are bad, and it is ok for them to feel that way, but if Trump says that he is fear mongering. Violent crime is up in cities, and the rate that the police are being shot is up. How can we deal with this problem? You guessed it, love!

If you are in inner city Chicago or Baltimore, and your child has been shot in a gang incident, just love that gang. If you are a cop that is spit on and hated on by the community you serve, just love them more. This will solve all of the problems! If you are Black Lives Matter, you also can have some love, but your anger and fear is understandable and justified.

This is a big issued that is ignored under the auspices of love. Obama claims that talk of this is fear mongering because crime is at historic lows. As I mentioned before, that doesn’t stop him and others from fear mongering over guns or black people fearing the police. What Obama fails to mention is that violent crime has been going up in the past year. This almost seems to correspond with the timing of the Mike Brown shooting, and the false hands up don’t shoot narrative. Obama out of love encouraged black lives matter and this lie, and ever since the more people are being killed.

We need to come up with real solutions to these problems. Changes need to be made both by police and black communities. Police need to have better training and perhaps wear body cameras, and bad cops need to be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law and weeded out. However, the black community has problems they need to deal with. The statistics show that blacks commit a disproportionally amount of violent crime, and are more likely to resist arrest. Only by dealing by both sides can we fix this problem. Although the Hillary people consider it legitimate to talk about abusive cops, it is racists fear mongering to bring up problems in the black community. This isn’t racism, its facts. We need to deal with this violence and what causes it. One of the things we can look at is the poor economic conditions in these communities, and how to solve them. Oh wait we can’t do that, because according to Obama and his ilk, focusing on that community’s economic hardship under his administration would be fear mongering!

Terrorism and extreme Islam- I saved the best for last. ISIS and other terror groups are inspiring attacks on the US and the western world. It seems you can’t turn on the television or computer without hearing about another terrorist attack on the west. Obama assures us that he has this under control, and it’s just a very small amount of radicals, a JV team if you will. Yet the frequency of the attacks increase. However, if we make the obvious point that they all seem to be killing in the name of Islam, or we point out that the attacks are increasing, we are fear mongering. (This is opposed to Obama’s administration that regularly points out the threat of right wing terror groups. Pointing that out isn’t fear mongering, it is prudent.) In fact, Obama says this fear helps the terrorists, and encourages violence against nonviolent Muslims. So how can we defeat terrorism and ISIS? You guessed it!

LOVE! We shouldn’t fear these people; we should love them. Those who had loved ones killed in San Bernardino or Orlando need to understand that getting angry at the terrorists is only helping them. You should love these people! Now, its ok and desirable to fear the guns they used, but not the terrorists. In fact, think of how lucky you are to have your loved one killed by a terrorist, now you have a platform to show the world your love!

It seems surreal, but that is the suggestion of the DNC; we need to stop fearing the terrorist and love them. It ok to hate the wealthy and Trump to these people, but hating terrorists is bigotry and helps the terrorists. You think that I am exaggerating this? Then look at Leon Panetta’s speech at the DNC. He was booed and chants of “Lies!” and “No more war” erupted when he talked about Hillary’s qualifications to deal with things like terrorism. It is peace and love at all costs, we can never fear terrorists or be violent towards them. Now a Trump supporter, you can physically attack, because of his hateful rhetoric, but not the terrorists.

Ask the people of Germany how their love for terrorists is treating them. Their leader, Merkel, also advocated an open border policy, and said we shouldn’t fear terrorists. Now there is an attack almost every day there, and the government is telling its people that it is only going to get worse. But the people that live there that now fear terrorism are just hate mongers, right?

Ask the people of Rotherham in England how much love helped them. The politicians there were so worried about being offensive to Muslims and not loving them that they refused to investigate claims of child sexual abuse, or grooming as it has come to be known. By the time they decided to get “fearful” and do something about it it had turned out that over 1400 children had been assaulted. But that is just a necessary cost of love.

Ask the people of Sweden how that love has treated them. They loved sharing their country with immigrants of a different culture, even when the numbers started got to over 10 percent of the population. Now, they have all but lost their country to Islamic immigrants. They have to tell their women to only go out in groups, and give PSA’s that they should not wear provocative clothing. Who cares that these women no longer have freedom to walk down the street alone, they now have an abundance of love.

To look at these problems and say we don’t want them here is fear mongering and hatred according to the Hillary crowd. Their policy of love has led ISIS to go from being nonexistent to now being the greatest threat to security we face. Yet they are still more concerned with offending Muslims than calling the problem out and dealing with it.

We need to be able to use our fear constructively to deal with the problem of terrorism. No one is suggesting locking all Muslims up, or killing them all, but we need to be able to have a discussion in how to deal with this problem, and unfortunately, a large part of that means being violent towards these terrorists.

There are other examples I could go into, like how fearing Iran is horrible (but fearing Russia is a-okay) and other such things, but you get the point. If you ever doubt how you are supposed to think, just remember this simple formula; Problem Republicans are concerned with- hateful fear mongering. Problem Democrats are concerned with- serious issues that need to be dealt with, and if you disagree you are ignorant or a bigot, etc.

Now I know that someone reading may say that over acting out of fear can also lead to many problems, and this is true. But there are two points to this. The first is that even if you think that some of Trump’s plans may be over acting, that is better than the alternative of just chanting love and hoping our problems will go away. The other thing is that the more we allow this mantra of love solving all of our problems to occur, the more problems escalate. This means that when we eventually have to deal with them, it will be harsher. For example, had border policies been enforced for the past 20 years, we wouldn’t be put in the position of having to deal with millions upon millions of illegal immigrants. The more we act with realism, the more we can deal with problems before they require drastic solutions.

Conclusions
The Hillary people are being hypocritical, condescending, and dangerous when the criticize Trump as just being a fear monger. They pretend to do this from some sort of moral high ground, but the reality is it is just a clever strategy to eliminate all criticisms of their mistakes. Any criticism of their policies or ideas is fear mongering, but when they criticize others by themselves using fear, it is perfectly acceptable.

It seems unbelievable to have to say, but just wishing problems away with love will solve nothing. Many on the left like to criticize Christians, and make fun of them for praying about solutions, but how is this any better? Identifying problems with the world is not fear mongering, it is the first step to making the world a better place.

Donald Trump's entire campaign platform is to fear monger and insult. It's all he has. Tell the people to be scared, and then reassure them they won't be scared once he's elected. And the say something like "Hillary has an ugly face" or some such.

Fear the Hispanics. Fear the Middle Eastern. Fear this. Fear that. Hide and take cover in your home until January 2017 when it will all be sunny, unicorns, and rainbows.

I'll just continue to be happy, enjoy life, and spread love.

Let's bring Bill Hick's back from the dead and vote him into office... love the pic.

Also, best post of the year. NO DOUBT! I agreed and would like to add that last night's DNC felt like the Cold War was still going on and all that fear mongering over Trump and Russia seems so insane in 2016.

Nixon(an evil person) goes to China and makes friends with some evil people, and the world is a better place for it cause we made friends(sorta) with a long time evil. Now, Trump looks like he is willing to be friendly with Russia and we are reminded that 31 years again we were are war with these people, and Putin is a bully(that somehow gets elected by the people) and Russia is worse than ISIS... its just insane that the people are eating up such insanity.

The NSA spies on the US citizens constantly, but that's ok; Russia spies on Clinton, and it's WW3. If she is our president we will be at some war within 6 months of her in office. Trump might buy us two or more years, so I say Don't vote for either and we might make it. Zombie Bill Hicks for president!

Anyway, thanks again for the fantastic read.

I disagree with your post OP.

Let me break it down this way.

A. Both parties are selling fear. Clinton is selling fear of Trump "We have to defeat Trump at all costs" and Trump is selling fear of ISIS and Illegal immigration etc. We know that selling fear is never a good thing. It's taking advantage of people and a way of not talking about the real problems we face.

B. Talking about fear...did you know that your more likely to die from eating McDonald's "food" or walking up and down your stairs than getting killed by ISIS. Why don't we talk about those two more pressing problems?

C. Love, Empathy, caring for your fellow humans is the way to conquer all of this. In the old days it was called being raised in a village where everyone did their part FOR the village and each other. These days it's every man for himself.

D. All of this fear mongering is really only a way to divide us. Watch FOX news. NOT the news shows but the pundits like Hannity and O'Reilly...there only job is to divide us with fear...Obama is stepping on the constitution. Liberals are doing this to you. There is a war on Christmas. Radical Islam is our greatest threat. All lies of course.

E. Do as I do. Hope for the best and prepare for the worst. My whole family knows hand to hand combat. We have dogs. We have months of food, Solar power, Bicycles, motorcycles, Tools, books and skills and items to barter. The result. We aren't scared of anything and live our lives empowered.

F. People that peddle and believe the fear mongering are cowards. They should go hide in a corner and stop spewing their fear and negativity to the rest of us.

Oh and the proof that love conquers all, read up on gandhi.

It not quite that simple though with Gandhi. First, he identified the problem of foreign people controlling the country. This would be called fear mongering by the Hillary crowd.

Next, the reason that his nonviolent protests worked was because the British knew that if they attacked a man who was not attacking them back, they would have had hell to pay. The people of India would have brutally forced them out. They British didn't leave out of love for Ghandi, they left out of the violence that would have been visited upon them had they fought Ghandi.

But you think is was just love that sloved the problem. So explain to me how love will solve ISIS? Does part of showing that love mean we must adhere to Sharia law, that women must be property of men, etc.?

Lastly, here are some quotes from Ghandi for you.

"I do believe that where there is only a choice between cowardice and violence I would advise violence,"

"..Hence also do I advocate training in arms for those who believe in the method of violence. I would rather have India resort to arms in order to defend her honor than that she should in a cowardly manner become or remain a helpless witness to her own dishonor." - M.K. Gandhi, The Doctrine of the Sword.

"..He who cannot protect himself or his nearest and dearest or their honour by non-violently facing death may and ought to do so by violently dealing with the oppressor. He who can do neither of the two is a burden. He has no business to be the head of a family. He must either hide himself, or must rest content to live for ever in helplessness and be prepared to crawl like a worm at the bidding of a bully ..."

"...A man who, when faced by danger, behaves like a mouse, is rightly called a coward.

Not knowing the stuff of which nonviolence is made, many have honestly believed that running away from danger every time was a virtue compared to offering resistance, especially when it was fraught with danger to one's life. As a teacher of nonviolence I must, so far as it is possible for me, guard against such an unmanly belief.

Self-defence ... is the only honourable course where there is unreadiness for self-immolation."

You get that last one? Unless you have practiced nonviolence to the extent of which Ghandi did, and be willing to kill yourself for your position, you must learn to fight back. So are you prepared to kill yourself to stop ISIS, and do you think that action will work?

I appreciate the response.

Clinton is selling far more fear than just that. The OP shows fear of Russia, the wealthy, climate change, guns, and treatment of blacks and immigrants. Why do you give them a pass for this?

As far as fear never being a good thing, that is also shown in the third section of the OP. Fear allows us to get prepared for problems. Why do people save money, for fear a situation may come up when they need it. Why do we have a military, for fear that someone may attack us, why have fire fighters, for fear that a fire may occur, etc.

And talking about real problems, what like the economy? Well Obama and Hillary say that just talking about the economy being bad is fear mongering.

B. Talking about fear...did you know that your more likely to die from eating McDonald's "food" or walking up and down your stairs than getting killed by ISIS. Why don't we talk about those two more pressing problems?

People do talk about these things, and fear them. Why do so many people exercise, for fear that the will get ill or die if they are in poor shape. Yet you say all fear is bad.

These are problems that we live with that are inevitable, and within our personal control. Terrorism is increasing in the US and the west, and to say we should just love it and not fear it is a joke. Should we not attempt to stop a terrorist from getting a WMD then? I mean, to even think of that is fear mongering, so just let them go. I would contend to you that if we didn't have agencies like the police, military, etc, agencies that exists because our fear of not wanting to be harmed, there would be much more violence and terrorism.

C. Love, Empathy, caring for your fellow humans is the way to conquer all of this. In the old days it was called being raised in a village where everyone did their part FOR the village and each other. These days it's every man for himself.

The old days huh. Sounds like you are trying to make America great again...

I am sure, but this is juvenile. Love does not conquer all. How will love solve terrorism? How will it solve the economy, or veterans health issues? The entire last three posts from the OP shows how ridiculous this is for each situation we see. No money to feed your kids, just give them love! Have agonizing pain from a wound in Afghanistan, just love it!

Warm and fuzzy phrases like love conquers all do nothing, and allow real problems to continue on un challenged.

You are taking situations of possible over fearing and using that to say no fear is ever justified. War on Christmas, I could care less about. Islamic terrorism, yeah I care. Good for you you don't live in Europe. They shared your love, and look where that has gotten them.

I like how you just point out Fox, but don't mention that the vast amount of the media is liberal, and they not only do this, but according to the leaked emails, they do so at the behest of the DNC.

Let me pose this question to you, if Obama is stepping on the Constitution, are we allowed to call him out on it, or is this dividing us?

Also, Isn't you calling out Fox just another extension of dividing us, especially because you ignore the other side? So congrats on dividing us further.

E. Do as I do. Hope for the best and prepare for the worst. My whole family knows hand to hand combat. We have dogs. We have months of food, Solar power, Bicycles, motorcycles, Tools, books and skills and items to barter. The result. We aren't scared of anything and live our lives empowered.

But your original fear led to that preparation. So Trump talks about the increase in violent crime in the past year, and strained race relations for example, and this is fear mongering. Yet how are we able to take the steps to solve this if we can't address the problem without it being considered fear mongering? If you had no fear of running out of food, why would you have ever stocked up?

F. People that peddle and believe the fear mongering are cowards. They should go hide in a corner and stop spewing their fear and negativity to the rest of us.

Right, that is the second point in the OP. Lets start with this then, you believe that anyone who discusses of fears climate change or guns are cowards, right? That means you think Hillary and Obama and almost all of their supporters are cowards.

You fear nothing, what a big man you are! A parent fears that if they lose their job they won't be able to provide for their family. What a coward, right?

The left like to rag on bullys, but what you and they are doing here is no better than a bully yelling "Chicken! Bwock bwock bwock!"

Well you go on being a real man while us cowards deal with the real world. I hope though you never find yourself in a sitaution when you are in fear and need help, you may just get the karma you deserve.

The DNC, which is rife with corruption and Orwellian tendencies, is simply doing public relations. It is a blatant distraction, which can only lead to wishful thinking.

Thanks for the reply. Couple of points. I'm not giving Hillary or the right a pass. I was just using "Fearing Trump" as one example of her fear mongering.

Now back to Fear itself. News pundits and politicians peddle fear. Hillary sells fear, Trump sells fear. But is it fear to say, be prepared? Or is that just common sense? I put four new tires on my truck last month. They were getting kinda bald but not quite there yet...so was that Fear or was it common sense?

You may say that's fear but, even if it is, it's not Fear Peddling like out politicians do.

Now, lets get back to Love...and it doesn't have to be love, but empathy, compassion and helping people is the key. Doing the right thing. We all know what doing the right thing is. Usually it's action of some sort.

Fear is the escalation of the feeling of helplessness. What gets rid of helplessness? Usually it's some action. Learning a skill, making some connections, putting a new lock on your door, buying a dog, working out, eating healthy, forming a neighborhood watch, going down to the police station to file a complaint, voting your conscience, Putting out a hundred job applications in one day, creating a resume, researching government programs, starting a side business, reading some books, growing your own garden, buying a bug out bag, learning to shoot, learning JiuJitsu, Taking some online classes,

Gandhi conquered a lot of his women through love, the love of his fists...

The cure for everything in their thought process is through love, so if someone with bad intentions brings a knife and a rifle to kill us, we must go to him and embrace him, if he kills us, at least we died hugging him... gtfo!

You are just saying... "nothing to see here folks, keep things just how the are".
In what part of your post did you make a cogent argument against the points brought forward by the OP?
I'm failing to see it.

I'm saying that too much fear is bad...and that it doesn't have to be love but action that helps yourself, your family, your friends and your community is what is needed. Fear is only a feeling of helplessness. The best way to get rid of that feeling is to get help or a real life connection with someone in your family, or your community. And then do something together that benefits you both... on a really, really low level that is love, is it not?
