I worked at a publishing company. They did convention book tours. Very common to take ticket count then find ways to fill seats by other means.

My kid works in Hollywood production. She did a lot of music videos. If tickets don't sell well - - - they find ways to fill the seats.

There are many ways. Free give aways from radio stations, have some intern walk the streets handing out free tickets, and sometimes pay people to attend.

The difference of course is that they have all those seats to fill because they kicked people out, not because no one showed up to fill them in the first place.

They could have people in them, but those people wouldn't be presenting the pretty unity pciture they want, so they kicked them out.
