I took a while to decide which forum to post a new "Star Wars" thread in. Obviously, there could be a few places it would slot in, but here it is and we'll see where it goes.

Just to set the tone: (pun intended)

I got thinking about SDI, an outdated subject on it's face, but the afterglow lingers up to the present time.

It must have been previously reported, that the reason for nuclear weapons is simply because there exists a counter-ICBM system.

That's my premise. Reviewing and remembering Reagan-era Cold War policy and strategy, it seems clear that nuclear weapons could have been eliminated, but were not. Applying a conspiracy mindset to this old strategic issue, it seems obvious that eliminating nukes would negate the "computerized" advantage the West had to wage a counter-ICBM war, and the associated systems.

Typing it out, it almost difficult to contrive an original thought on the subject, except to look at it in it's totality, and in 20/20 hindsight. The spectre of nuclear war itself drove the US and UK public to accept a continuation of Global War, full spectrum dominance, social constraints in the form of budget and policy.

This brings us to the current era, the dawn of WW3 or WW4. Surely, any sane person or objective outsider could ask how in the world we could come to a MAD condition for so very long. I remember it for my entire life, with the Cuban Missile Crisis occurring before I was born.

As a footnote, Gorbachev expected the emancipated Warsaw pact countries to pursue "Socialism with a human face", and not "run off to The West". This is the crux of the current conflict with Russia, that they lost control of their satellite states. What is the first thing that Putin turns to, nuclear deterrence, MAD, first-strike and a Russian version of the Samson Option or Dead Man's Hand. This reflects on the basic nature of the East-West conflict, but for so VERY long.

How is it possible that nuclear war and it's weapons still exist?! Surely there is more to Gorbachev's bawlk at Regan's Zero Option. Are nukes a necessary evil, or a conspiracy that's implemented exclusively for government control and prosperity of Military Industrial Complex. Surely, production and consumption of conventional weapons alone could support the MIC industry. Aside from a strategic bulwark, why from a conspiracy perspective do they exist?

Why wouldn't they still exist?

Since when in the history of mankind have we ever set power or weapons aside?

Bio weapons have essentially been "put back into the bottle", with no modern examples of their use. Much of their study is dedicated to counter remedies against their effectiveness.

Chem weapons are generally considered ineffective on the modern battlefield, used primarily as a terror weapon.

Nuclear weapons have a grandiose aspect to them, and are produced in obscene quantities. They are unique in this regard, and have made a permanent scar on our psyche.

Is the reason they have not been eliminated being a political conspiracy, moreso than a strategic necessity? After all, nobody wins...?

Recent discussion on renewing Trident brings the subject to life... (pun intended?)

Get serious in your scenarios.

How can you eliminate an key item of warfare when "everybody and their buddy" has 'em?

Supposed the US/allies and Russia dumped their dumped nukes way back when for some unthinkable reason? Where would that leave us today? Nukes, a lot of nukes on missiles, are a strong deterrent to any aggressor, just as a defensive gun in hand.

The Space Defense Initiative was about arming space with weapons to keep several emerging world powers in check. It was an advantage point that no one else came close to achieving in those days and even right up to this day.

Those mysterious black triangles frequently making the news in the US and Gary McKinnon's tapping into some of the Pentagon's secret ships should be enough for the average thinker to figure out what has transpired with the SDI program. It is alive and well under the auspices of the US Space Force an aspect of SDI.

What has changed, and what SDI could never counter, delivery "systems" have diversified and dispersed to modes other than ICBM. Also, there does not always exist a clear target for reprisal with non-state actors.
