Turkey isn't rightly a member, they're primarily a Muslim nation and... Muslim nations can't really belong to NATO or the EU.

NATO was formed for the purpose of defending Europe against Russia, so Turkey fits into that well enough, was a member from the early stages.
But the culture of the EU is really western Europe. Even Greece fits into it badly (I've done a thread on this in the past), so yes, bringing in Turkey is even more dubious.

Lol at all this mewling about "democracy." Who actually thinks democracy works, especially in the case of Turkey run by a guy like Erdogan? It's pretty obvious real change only comes through violence, in which case kudos to the Turkish military. Too bad westerners are too docile and cowed to attempt anything similar.

Best case scenario the genocidal freak Erdogan gets smacked into oblivion and the Kurds gain something from this.

Clever Erdogan, I believe you are right OP. The coup was allowed to fester to draw all the soldiers who don't support him in to the open. Now he can cleanly execute them all with the approval of the NATO powers and further consolidate his power. Don't forget Turkey gets billions in foreign aid (mostly military) from the US and NATO countries. He has to play their game which apparently includes clandestine support for ISIL as well as serving as the far eastern nation encircling Russia with a ring of missile bases. I wonder just how much of the foreign aid given to Turkey is being funneled to ISIS? Quite a lot I should imagine.

ETA: Turkey is a democracy until it comes to the Kurds.

The 3rd military coup in 1980 had support by NATO/the U.S. under Jimmy Carter.

Because of their 'geo political' strategic position. I.E., the Turkish Straits, Baltic States and the Black Sea. But like the low member on the totem pole, they are tolerated, not embraced. Their continuing denied membership in the EU exemplifies that.

Turks aren't stupid, they are aware their government is little more than a tool of NATO, used to attack neighboring countries covertly and unjustly without a declaration of war. Who would know that better than the military?
