I wonder if the Turkish military is trying to prevent another terrorist attack in Turkey.

Battening down the hatches so to speak. Since obviously Erdogan and the legislature aren't capable of protecting public safety. The military has the resources and the ability to prevent further terrorist attacks in Turkey and the truck in France recently might have been motivation enough for the coup leaders to take action.

So he has some undeniable support from the populace. It's hard to say how they'll react to a coup by the predominantly secular military.

The same way they always have. Just as the Egyptians did. They move on. In both nations tehe elected leaderships popularity was in decline. The people of Turkey put a great deal of faith in the Turkish military to look out for what is best for the nation. Traditionally they have always accepted military coups as what is best. It is possible he will have a loyal groups of supporter who might resist but most of the nations will accept it, even applaud it and move on.
