A lorry has been deliberately driven at high speed into a large crowd near to Hotel Negresco, who were commemorating Bastille Day in Nice, France.

The Mayor of Nice said that “a lorry driver appears to have killed dozens of people”.

Latest stable reports suggest 73 souls, ~100 injured and that the driver was shot dead by police.

Images of the lorry show bullet holes and it now appears that a shoot-out has been confirmed between the attacker and police. French media is also apparently saying that guns and grenades were found in the truck.

Early reports suggested a possible hostage situation, however the French Interior Ministry have confirmed the contrary.

WARNING: It appears that images and videos, including from news outlets, are apparently very graphic. I can’t personally confirm that, but do be aware before you click things. Links are fine in this opening post, at least at this time.

Secretary of State for Victim Support, Juliette Méadel, has asked that the public not share photos or videos from the crime scene out of respect for the victims and their families.

Radio Five Live (BBC) are also advising people to use extreme caution.

For that reason, sources are being kept to a minimum in this post.

PANIC IN NICE AS LORRY HITS CROWD

A lorry has struck a crowd during Bastille Day celebrations in the southern French city of Nice, media reports and witnesses say.

The incident took place on the Promenade des Anglais during a firework display, the reports said.

One image on Twitter showed about a dozen people lying on the street, some being tended to.

The local prefecture has urged people in the area to remain indoors, calling the incident "an attack".

Some reports spoke of shots being fired but these have not been confirmed.

Watching it on FAUX News right now. At the moment it cannot be determined if it was an act of terror. They're saying right now that 'dozens' are dead, and many more injured.

French media reporting 30 dead, and that gunfire was exchanged between lorry driver and Police.

Local 'government' has advised residents to stay indoors.

UNCONFIRMED reports of a hostage situation at a burger restaurant.

The images of the dead are hideous.

Yeah, we’re gonna get conflicting reports for a while. Early suggestions are an accident, other Google result titles alluding to ISIL already.

Ooooh... 30 souls. Not good at all.

Yes, they showed a pic of the scene of the crime on the news just now and it was a bloody mess. It was a very disturbing image.

There's already a clip of the aftermath on Liveleak.

Am I allowed to link to something like that on ATS? It's pretty gruesome.

I hope all ATS members that are celebrating Bastille Day right now are safe, as well as all citizens of France.

As the thread author, I’d much rather that you do not post the usual stuff which is apparently all over the news. I don’t have a telly but I’m seeing a lot of people criticising the news channels for showing the graphic nature of the incident.

It almost seems like they’re deliberately glorifying it, as if it’s a threat of sorts against every one of us. This is just really messed up, something isn’t right.

The timing sure seems to be convenient...

French aircraft carrier Charles de Gaulle will return to its mission to combat Daesh terrorist group in Persian Gulf, after undergoing technical maintenance in France, French President Francois Hollande said [on Wednesday this week].

The head of the country added, that France will boost its assistance to the Iraqi army in the fight for freeing Mosul from terrorists in northern Iraq by sending military instructors to the country.
