I have a .gif image uploaded and was wondering how I can make it my avatar?

What do I need to do exactly..step by step....oh, my, I feel completely stupid.

copy paste the url to the image in the avatar box in the control panel/options

in the top right of the screen click it and follow that!

then click edit profile scroll down and there is an avatar box
copy and paste the url
gotta have the http:// too
