It's peculiar how anyone could see anything conspiratiorial or sinister in this. To me, it's partly a nod to the past (the retro space exploration posters and books), partly a hopeful initiative to inspire the future generation of astronauts and space scientists.

If anything, it's cute.

NASA have also released these retro-looking space exploration posters:

I love these sentimental and imaginitive forays into the future of space exploration; it's the original spirit of early science fiction novels and movies.

The best such effort, so far, for me, is the short film "Wanderers"

Great video... makes me want to go pull out all my sci-fi movies and have a movie-watching binge fest.
