Using the recent tsunami crisis as a means to open military talks, the United States and Indonesia have begun discussions, not seen since the early 1990's. Counter terrorism training for Indonesian forces resumed shortly after the 9-11 attacks, but, congressional restrictions on American training and arms sales were still in place. The U.S. military assistance to Indonesia was halted in 1992, due to demonstrators in East Timor being killed by Indonesian forces, as well as human rights abuse by the army.

I see this as a good thing. We as Americans need to do our best to communicate with other countries. When you shut people out matters only get worse.
Mr. Sudarsono has appealed to Washington to provide more training for officers. This is admitting that they need help. And I for one am glad to know our country will try to provide any help with military training needs of this country.
