Russia unveils new hypersonic Mach 7 missile re-entry vehicle to defeat Europe's missile shield. this tips the balance and makes the missile shield a waste of time & money. Why is it 26 years since the fall of the Iron Curtain are some so determined to provoke a new Cold War?
This was not necessary but Russia was forced to up the stakes. Why does NATO have to militarise eastern Europe?

Why does NATO have to militarize eastern Europe?

Why did Napoleon and Hitler?

To conquer the world.

Look no one is going to launch a nuke on anyone or it would have happened already.

The West has no intention of invading Russia and Russia may have interest in taking back some of the former stolen USSR states such as poland but not work a Nuclear war.

MAD is still very much the doctrine of the big boys and if Nuke goes kinetic, mach 7, SLBMS, ICBMS are going to make a pretty big mess whether you have a missile defence shield or not.

Preach!

We are all stuck on this pebble together, the least we could do is not cause our own extinction.

dude, you do realize the headline pic they offer is the SR-72 right?

you know, an american test plane.

Oh, that and yea while hypersonic is devastating for an entry weapon, it's not very versatile. So if the target it is going for can move just a little bit, it is safe.

Russian Hypersonic glider

To your last sentence question: I would guess because WWII never really ended for Russia/USSR as they stole most of eastern Europe and took it as their own. Then there was the Berlin Blockade. Oh, and who created the Iron Curtain? You know, a brief review on the expansion of communism from the early days until yesterday, would help you immensely.

Well, when you rely on a Russian government controlled news source you can be sure it'll have a particular slant. There's avoidance of mentioning the militarisation of Kaliningrad by Russia and the belligerence towards Ukraine.

I don't think NATO is militarising Eastern Europe, beyond supporting NATO members. The missile shield has been a long-standing policy. If Russia want a demilitarised zone, I am sure this could be arranged, but Russia will need to reciprocate.

Every former Soviet country that was once bullied or forced to join the USSR is now a free state.

If they want to join NATO, that is their right as free, sovereign nations to do so. This way they cannot, and will not be bullied by Putin.

Yeah the missile defense system is not going to stop a massive Russian nuclear attack anyway. It does not have those capabilities not to mention Russian boomers full of nukes that the system also can not effect. So what if the Russian can not launch one or two nukes against Europe? When would they be doing something like that? It would all in or nothing at all. Russian propaganda has gotten as bad as North Korea, it is like they do not even try anymore.

They know that. The real technology is hypersonic and non-ballistic maneuvering which still has accuracy. That is not easy.

Existing ICBM re-entry vehicles are extremely fast, hypersonic, and completely unpowered and non-maneuvering. They are literally doing nothing but falling; that's what a ballistic missile means. In space, the missile targets and orients the warhead, but after that, the warhead just spins and falls very fast.

The level of technology necessary to do that to the precision that they have now is already extremely advanced.

A ballistic missile has a predictable trajectory which, with extreme difficulty, makes it interceptable (maybe). A maneuvering re-entry vehicle would be sufficiently unpredictable that no interception is possible within the time-scales necessary (which is likely under 10 seconds).

There is another side of that particular coin that you are ignoring, just as our Western nations did back in the bad old days of the cold war...Anti-Communistic forces, carving out their own stomping grounds around the world, while the Soviets were doing the same.

It was pretty much stalemate in that regard for decades, until the Soviets were beaten, ironically not with guns and bombs, but with economics. The ability to spend the most determined who would be victorious in the cold war, not strength of armies, not the political ideals...but who had the deepest pockets, and that was the West.

And now of course, along came China. Realising why the Soviets lost, have decided to beat the West at our own game, and have been doing so for the last couple of decades.

If it was economics that eventually defeated the Soviets, it will also be economics that will ultimately do the same to the West.

Move just a little bit and you're safe? Really?

1. Hypersonic gliders maneuver
2. How do you propose displacing EVERYTHING in the projected blast radius? Mind you, displacing said items dozens of miles to avoid the blast.

But yeah, just move a little bit and you're safe...

I actually just got back from being in Russia. They just tested an anti-satellite missile and the common man over there is scared to death of our railguns. The general rule of thumb with the Russian's is, if they haven't shown it off, they don't have it.

By the way sputnik news isn't available in Russia to Russian's. It's an anti western propganda tool and has been admitted as such. Like 90% of the Russian media is directly funded by the government. RT is about as good as it gets for them.
