The University of North Carolina offers a communications course about the dangers of hate speech, which the courses professor openly blames on the political right.
According to the course catalog, the class was designed “to expose students to the nature of hate in American life . . . [that] is sustained through the imposition of racist, sexist, and heterosexist ideologies[.]"

The class, titled “Hate Speech” and designated by the course number COMM 624, is taught by Dr. Michael S. Waltman, who has written and co-authored several books about hate speech, including The Communication of Hate, which “examines the strategic manipulation of hatred in [Americans’] everyday lives by politicians, political operatives, and media personalities.”

According to the course catalog, the class was designed “to expose students to the nature of hate in American life . . . [that] is sustained through the imposition of racist, sexist, and heterosexist ideologies that privilege Whiteness, maleness, and heterosexuality.”

The description states that hate may “be resisted through communication” involving respect and tolerance, a term the course adopted from the Southern Poverty Law Center. Students are taught how to recognize hate so that “knowledge of the essence of hate will place students in a position to fight hate when they encounter it in their own lives.”

UNC’s Undergraduate Student Services confirmed to Campus Reform that the class has been listed on the course catalog since the spring of 2010, but may have been offered before then, since the university switched to a new online cataloging system at the start of that year. Waltman also taught an “Honors Hate Speech” course in 2008.

Wow, so what this man has been teaching in Universities since 2008 is that "hate speech comes from the right"... Meanwhile these leftwing dictators wannabes (he is not the only one, the SPLC and the Obama administration have been doing the same thing) have been claiming that "tolerance and respect", which according to them only is present in leftwing dictatorships, "are the tools the left needs to counter such racism"...

Seriously? Is that why BLM has been attacking people for simply wanting to study instead of bowing down to their antics? Is that why BLM is not considered as "a hate group" when they have been openly calling for the murders of police officers?

Is that why Sanders supporters have been so violently attacking Trump supporters, and disrupting his rallies?...

Because leftwing groups like the two I mentioned above are so "tolerant and respectful"?

I don't understand how people are able to get college credit to get propagandized.
No wonder the 'youth' of today is the way they are.

"I got an 'A' in this course, so I know I'm right about it."
What a bunch of gullible tools...

The real hate speech comes from elementary school playgrounds and if you can't deal with child-like insults, you will never be ready to be an adult.
Period.

Liberals control the education system.

Until we are able to return control to a neutral body our education system will continue to spout this nonsense. It is a shame this is the case and a travesty that we need to pay these people for a 'higher' education.

It is an obvious historical fact, the left is responsible for every major massacre of the 20th century.

The left always tries to claim Hitler was a righty, which is funny, since he was a socialist, you know "national socialism " known as Nazism.

The left created the KKK, Jim crow was a democrat, the democrats opposed enmass the civil rights acts and laws, and the end of slavery.

What did the right do?

None of the above!

Look at this nonsense:

We will learn that hatred is sustained through the imposition of racist, sexist, and heterosexist ideologies that privilege Whiteness, maleness, and heterosexuality.

I suppose ideologies that privilege non-whiteness, non-maleness, and non-heterosexuality is considered love?

Violence is a mainstay of leftism. The Left had its beginning in the French revolution, and their first bright idea was the Reign of Terror. The guillotine was a symbol of the revolution.

O.K., I get it. Not to hard to understand what's going on with this course.

But here's the bigger question, really!

You sign up to go to University. You pretty well know your weak points, i.e., maybe you're not a whiz at Language Studies, or History bores you. You pretty well know your strong points, math, science, biology, etc. Now, you've decided your going to University and its going to cost 60K a year so you've got to figure out how to minimize your losses so you figure out you want a major in biology and a minor in genetics because your hearts dream is to get a job with DARPA figuring out how to weaponize viruses to kill mass numbers of people.

Are you going to waste your time on this course?

My example could be applied to engineering students, or pre-med students, or pre-dental students, or Psychiatrists students........etc.

So, what with the explosion in the cost of University, who exactly is going to waste their precious time on a crap course like this?!

Lefties also lose their minds if anyone disagrees with their rhetoric.

Which is why Pol Pot, MAO and Stalin killed hundreds of millions between them.

Everyone must agree or else.

You don't see that out of the right.

LOL never thought I as a white, male, hetrosexual, christian, would be classified as a hate profile! I personally believe in free will.

And here we go, the right claiming their innocence while blaming it on the left.

All I have to say is, Trump. But of course, his supporters deny he ever said anything hateful. He's an angel in their eyes.

Both sides can be hateful but it's the Progressive movement that seems to be the agitators.

Answer me this: why do "peaceful" anti-Trump protestors at his rallies carry eggs?

Yea and the left is full of angels? In case you hadn't noticed they portray in this course description a blanket description of the right being the root cause of hate speech. But if it gets pointed out that say that a majority of Mexicans are criminals and by the fact that a vast majority are illegally in this country, we hear that we can not assume that a given Mexican is a criminal. Even though by definition breaking a law makes you a criminal. But it's just totally true that hate speech is exclusive to the right? It is a shame that people are just that stupid.

Never mentioned Trump once in my post.
Not to mention this course has been around since 2010, way before Trump was a player on the political right.
So, there is no need to bring any obsessive Trump hate on this thread at all.

My point was that hate speech starts waay before any politics are involved and that some classes offered in a lot of colleges do the opposite of getting young people ready for the adult world, let alone teach anything of value.

It looks like a pretty dumb course, to be honest.

But before anyone gets their sensitive little feelings hurt, the professor wrote papers and created the syllabus for a course which is offered once a year, for about 30 students. It is not mandatory to any discipline or major, but "may" be taken as part of a interpersonal and organizational communications concentration.

Let me spell it out: no one has to take it, it is not required for anything, and it is one wild professors thesis, blown up into a full semester course. This is not -- by far -- the goofiest course taught to willing adults in America. There are courses on ancient Spartan warfare, the technology of Star Trek and prostitution (controlling "loose" women). Yippie Kay Yay!

Meanwhile, this same college is under fire (and investigation) for offering several courses in "Athletics" (lol) while passing student athlete's who rarely -- if ever -- show up for it.

For the record: no one takes a single course in anything -- save the "hard" sciences -- and thinks an A means they know it all. Most students, who are required to take courses in the soft sciences understand that the quickest way to an A in such a course is to keep ones head down, and not rile up entitled professors ahead of grading. This is doubly true for courses in economics, which are often taught by clueless conservatives, and push ideas about economic prosperity, based on trickle-down theories of wealth, taxation and regulation.

The only thing education is good for -- apart from networking (which is more important than anything else BTW) -- is that it teaches you how to "think," and "critically analyze" information. Whether this actually works is a fairly big question at this point, based on all the political posturing / footballing that goes on in the workplace and (social) media.

Ideally -- a university is a place that teaches core competencies in math, science, and literacy, as well as the rudimentary knowledge one needs to get a starting job in a particular field, or go on to post-grad work.

The educated are supposed to at least share a common frame of reference, and an understanding of the ideas and forces that shaped western culture, so that they can actually communicate -- at work -- with peers and managers who share that frame of reference.

It isn't supposed to teach anyone what their personal politics are or should be, and it isn't any good (at all) at teaching the latest software package or proprietary technology platform. Anyone who tells you otherwise is selling you an agenda, and if you are dumb enough to buy it, the joke is on you.

What minority has Trump "blamed the ills of the world" on? I find this funny since white people are the most common and main stream scapegoats for all the ills of the world.

What hate speech? Do you label anything you don't agree with put in a non-politically correct way as hate speech? Those people carry eggs because they are brainwashed and don't believe in free speech. I know what hate and racism is and what it sounds like, and I haven't heard it from Trump. He says insensitive things that piss off sensitive p.c. people, and that is precisely the point. But hate? Give me a break.

There is no such thing as hate speech.

There is free speech or censorship.

Funny how one side says much worse at Trump protests, while being overtly violent and assaulting peaceful trump supporters.

But you act like trump is the problem....

Here in America, unlike all the rest of you commy nutjobs in the west, we have free speech, it is a right.

Violence because Trump said something they don't like, has never been a right ever.
