reports say they have I.D.'d the UCLA shooter from yesterday.

His name is Mainak Sarkar.

He was a "former" PhD student.

And the alleged reason(s) for his targeting a professor are astounding !!!

The claim is the professor took his computer code !!!

Mr. Sarkar sure was persistent wasn't he.

Good question.

I don't quite understand that myself.

Maybe he never got a PhD ?

I meant why did you put in quotation marks?

Former PhD student means he is now either a PhD or he dropped out of the program.

This post on the other thread about the shooting indicates that he seems to have failed consistently in his studies and it may have been a motive for the act.

Could be he was a flunkie and took his rage and jealousy out on the professor.

It seems he accused the guy of stealing his work or something.

Clearly not a happy, stable bunny.

You can't help some people it would seem, and in some cases shouldn't try.

Yeah I just don't get the quotation marks... like OP was suggesting the shooter was something else. Anywho seems like OP just threw out a wild punctuation.

Thanks for taking your time to be the punctuation police. ATS owes you a great debt.

Looks like this fella had some kind of hit list too !!!!

His mental problems were deep I bet.

UCLA shooting: Gunman Mainak Sarkar had 'kill list,' police chief says

Police found a "kill list" at the Minnesota home of the gunman who opened fire at UCLA on Wednesday, Los Angeles Police Chief Charlie Beck told CNN affiliate KTLA-TV.
The name of the UCLA professor killed by gunman Mainak Sarkar was on the list, as was the name of a woman whom police later found dead, Beck said.

"We did a follow-up investigation to that female's residence in a nearby town in Minnesota and found her deceased by gunshot wound," Beck said.

OP pushes wild claims frequently I was asking to find out what angle he was pushing. It turns out none, the punctuation threw me off. But thanks for your attempt at policing the police.

Doesn't killing one's self equate to dropping out of the program?

On-topic to the OP, though, I just need to say that this student obviously had a heaping dose of crazy within his head. No sane person kills someone over them taking their computer code.

Another crazy individual disregarding the strict gun laws of the State of California, probably Los Angeles County, and probably the City of Los Angeles, and definitely the university, which we all know to be a "gun-free zone."

When will lawmakers and legislators figure out that you cannot legislate away the crazy that exists in people?

I grew up in Cali, but in Kern County (Bakersfield), and it is a "red" county that is little conservative pocket in a big blue state. The Kern County School District is considering allowing teachers to carry concealed firearms at their schools, and I applaud them for even proposing it. I hope that it passes, because without knowing any real specifics of what went down during the confrontation of the two victims, here, IF the professor had immediate access to a firearm on his hip, there is a possibility that he would still be alive today to tell his story of survival.

But we'll never know, because these gun-free zones work so well.

Such a waste of life, regardless.
