..... Because Bill Didn’t Promote Abortion

Some controversy about a House Bill that included some funding for fighting the Zika virus.

Seems a few Democrats were upset because the bill apparently didn't place enough (or any) importance on abortion.

The abortion issue would be connected to pregnant women infected with Zika.

Zika is said to produce birth defects.

I thought abortion is already available?

Looks like this effort is just another political statement that takes advantage of social/science issues.

Democrats Vote Against Funding to Combat Zika Virus Because Bill Didn’t Promote Abortion

A group of U.S. Congressional Democrats voted against life-saving aid for people with the Zika virus on Wednesday simply because the funding bill did not promote abortions.

The Hill reports the bill provides $622 million in funding to combat the mosquito-borne Zika virus, which has been spreading throughout South America and into North America and across the world. The bill passed the U.S. House on Wednesday but not before a group of Democrats objected, arguing that American tax dollars should be used to fund abortions for women with Zika.

Abortion advocates have been using the Zika virus as an excuse to push for more abortions on babies with disabilities. The virus has been linked to birth defects in babies. Several South American countries have reported an alarming spike in the number of babies born with microcephaly in the past few months. The brain disorder is not typically fatal, but it can cause health problems throughout the child’s life. In an eugenic-like push, abortion activists argue that South American countries should legalize abortion so that women infected with the virus can abort unborn babies who may have the disorder.

Congress is using Zika to weaken truck safety: Fighting the virus is tied to a bill that would allow fatigued truckers to stay on the road for more than 80 hours a week.

In the Senate, a measure that allows 73 hours of driving and an additional 8.5 hours on related work each week was added to a massive spending measure that will fund transportation, housing and military construction projects, as well as the Veterans Administration. Funding for Zika prevention has also been added to that bill, making it very likely to pass.

IF they blocked it, it was probably bc dems wanted more money. I know they have been arguing with the republicans about how much money to spend, Republicans want to spend significantly less.

I read many major news sources, yesterday, that featured stories about republicans blocking this bill. I don't see how this source's perspective is substantively different.

dems shot it down because the repugs, ever the shady bastards, attached a rider to rescind trucking regulations to prevent drivers from being on the road for more than 80 hours. Why repugs felt rolling back this safety regulation would help fight the zika virus, I don't know, but clearly it had NOTHING to do with Zika. Just another shady rider trying to slip through on a "who-would-vote-against-this" bill.

PS if you side with the repugs on this one, I hope you die in a fiery trucking accident caused by a trucker who has been on the road for 80+ hours.

ETA: Repugs have actually been the ones blocking funding, have done so several times now.

The truck driving issue is coming from the Senate.
