Is it really 1968 all over again....a thought about the landscape of the 2016 election

I got to thinking about the current election cycle and it mimics 1968...

1968. LBJ decided he was not running and the Democratic ticket was wide open. To look at the parallels to the modern day 2016 election lets us use the following. This will tell us that there is violence ahead, and, a Republican winner in November.

1968 - Racial tensions and civil rights protests at an all time high.
2016- Racial tensions and civil rights protests at an all time high.

Tension was high in the DNC in 68 just as it is now. The component that is next is who will die?

1968 - RFK and MLK are both killed in the early part of the year. One was running for president and one was an outspoken leader of the civil rights movement. Before the conventions, as we can see with reports of DNC madness there is a good chance for a long hot summer.
2016- A protest or another shooting will spark widespread rioting.

The conventions? in 1968 it was a 2 to 1 ratio cop to protester and there were 10's of thousands. It was nuts. Are the Bern supporters not going to be there? I am thinking they may make the city feel the 'burn'. What will that lead to?

There were 3 parties that year which could happen in 2016, which included a very, very radical thinker in George Wallace. To me he is this years Bernie Sanders. Appealing to some but not enough mainstream to carry. A good showing but...nope. There are a great number who follow but not enough to win. Socialist-Racist....very obscure views for a leader in the US.

In 1968 the 'silent minority' came out to elect one Richard Nixon. You now have a not so silent minority who is coming out to vote. The same wave is being created and we could see carbon copy the DNC splits and the GOP stays on the train.

It is almost as if this is 1968 2.0

Nothing is absolute but it sure seems like history is once again repeating itself.

If you are looking at that matafuchs, you must see that demand for civil rights issues come and the ignorant fight it. It causes violence. The ignorant cause the violence.

There are certainly parallels in what you bring up. People had to fight hard for human rights over the course of our country's history and that was one of those times.

We may be having another one of those times. I wasn't even born the last time, but I know I will be here and on the right side of history this time.

Where will you be?

I've never understood how modern conservatives don't look at history and see that time and time again "conservatism" has been on the wrong side of history.

It's like finding out that Dark Vader thinks he's the protagonist of the story.

I will be protecting my family and my fellow Americans. You if you were there next to me. I am sure about that. I don't care who you are, what you look like or where you are from, we all die the same and we are all born the same. We are all equals.

Bernie Sanders should be the DNC nominee. Add a female and it is a done deal. Problem is he cannot be controlled just like Trump cannot.

The problem is that special interest groups make the masses argue and fight over things that already exist so we do not think about what new problems there are.

LGBT - Non Issue. Been ok for years now it is important
Build a Wall - Already started and defunded
Illegal immigration - Even during NAFTA talks our government addressed the problem
Terrorism - Not hunting Muslims, but putting in place standards and checking existing visas. Like Carter did in the late 70's

The MSM pumps this into the masses and it is believed. Many times there is some truth, but many times you need to read stories from 6 news outlets to get 20% of the actual story.

I was just reading up on the 68 convention and then the election and it was eerily similar.

I like that one. But seriously, that is quite right. Just a cursory glance at history will show it. Eventually, those deserving of rights make progress no matter how much 'conservatives' fight against it. There are always too many who know what is important to fight for in our society, it takes time, often decades, but the ...ethically correct- always win.

The only problem I see is, we don't have a Hunter S. Thompson to cover the political landscape like he did. Pretty intense stuff them riots in '68.

This whole country is a tinder box in many ways like sixty eight. But now, there is a much larger and ready to fight right wing. This right wing thinks it can side step the establishments chosen pawn. In sixty eight that were happy to take the criminal puppet they were offered. Not this time.

This time, the right wing is ready and are not voting for the establishments favored sons. They are speaking out and choosing their own leader which would all be swell and good but for one thing. They have been taken in by a flim flam man.

I'm just going to take that one point, the rest are a mess.

Trump is definitely controlled. Always has been, has always been an insider. He always planned to take money, he just admitted it recently.

Sanders, I have great doubt he can be controlled- yet I cannot say for sure that anyone who takes that Office can't be controlled.

back to your Op---

I do see a change, if you follow history, it is not the one you are looking for.

Color me surprised that a republican party co opted by Tea Party nuts were taken in by a flim flam man. They also once loved Sarah palin. Some still do.

Your sentiments betray your screenname. Your man Trump will go along with the "program" or get that ass JFK'ed, just like anyone else that gets into the oval office.

It will actually be a foreign policy and economic nightmare. I will be sure to remind you of it when it happens.
