Yes there is a difference between WANTING desperately someone just to shut up for once, compared to silencing them.

TBH I'm a bit lost on the point of this thread.

Show me a link that says he wants to get rid of private ownership of all business and commerce. Please.

Dude. That's what socialism is.

Either Bernie Sanders doesn't understand it, or you don't.

Which is it?

ETA: For reference, the "simple definition" of socialism as provided by Merriam-Webster:

a way of organizing a society in which major industries are owned and controlled by the government rather than by individual people and companies

I don't know how much clearer we can make it for you.

Option 3. You don't.

Look up Switzerland.

They are a direct democracy, very capitalistic, less public spending than us - But less homelessness than USA, less go hungry, etc.

He's using a term people are familiar with. Not embodying the dictionary definition, which is hardly ever used.

If I don't like what someone is saying, I ignore them or refute what they say.

With ...... opinions, rather than facts. Right?

I don't try to shut the person up. Silencing people because of different opinions is somewhat authoritarian.

Who asked you to shut up? Someone asking you to please leave them alone, and asking you to stop spreading lies and calling those lies "your opinion" is not the same as "silencing" (or trying to silence) you.
Get your facts straight, and then talk.
You apparently have not had a chance to check this out: Democratic Socialists of America

Click on it! It explains how they think.

At the root of our socialism is a profound commitment to democracy, as means and end. As we are unlikely to see an immediate end to capitalism tomorrow, DSA fights for reforms today that will weaken the power of corporations and increase the power of working people. For example, we support reforms that:

decrease the influence of money in politics

empower ordinary people in workplaces and the economy

restructure gender and cultural relationships to be more equitable.

We are activists committed to democracy as not simply one of our political values but our means of restructuring society. Our vision is of a society in which people have a real voice in the choices and relationships that affect the entirety of our lives. We call this vision democratic socialism — a vision of a more free, democratic and humane society.

Not sure why you would have a problem with those items/goals.

Maybe whoever would like you to acknowledge the facts, rather than lying about what Democratic Socialsim is...you think? Maybe?
Just - saying.

Sorry to invade your rant here.

The really tragic thing is that you just don't get the concept. If your behavior is simply because you're not getting the concept, then it's important for you to investigate the facts.

Yeah, DC, I catch your point. And it is a rant after all and rants are a mixture of emotionally fueled explosions. We can chat on the relative virtues of capitalism and socialism another time. Have a nice day.

So he's advocating something else, then? Not socialism?

Even though he's telling everyone it's socialism?

In other words... he's totally lying in order to manipulate everyone?

Fantastic.

Whew.

The last few days has been intense here. Not like the usual fun. people have been private messaging me to not post anymore. Apparently my view on socialism is taboo.

You can imagine what some of the messaging I get are about.

He's not lying to anyone. Read his campaign platform on his website. He says he is a democratic socialist. He doesn't say one thing about changing this country to full on socialism. Not once. He says nothing about wanting the government to own all the major industries. He wants to stop corruption - of the 1% and of the government. He wants America to be closer to the Nordic Model, which is NOT full on socialism, but is a capitalist model with expanded social programs. There are no lies there.

Then let's stop calling it socialism, because the f# dictionary defines it as something you're not describing.

What should we call Sanders' philosophy then, if it has no relationship to the dictionary definition of socialism?

Open question. If what we're talking about does not conform to what is commonly accepted in the western world as the definition of "socialism", what should we call it?

Or would you just prefer to go on calling it something it isn't?

Misrepresentation is a form of dishonesty.

As Antony Sutton says, the synthesis of Hegelian Dialectic will be the NWO....neither right nor left. So when DSA says they want to stop corporatism, they really mean they want to eliminate capitalism because they are socialist ... see? and the goal of socialism is communism, Lenin said it and regardless your personal feelings he was the father of the Russian Communist Revolution.
Oligarchic and Monopolistic competition marks the abuse of corporations not the true free enterprise/free markets that Milton Friedman lectured about. That is the bad side of corporatism and crony capitalism abounds today and plenty of corporations are funding Hillary.
The NWO is neither right nor left but you can bet the monied interests are on top of the heap and the little people will get the shaft.

This must be, has to be, the explanation of what your problem is:

Socialism is an opportunistic infection.

It's what happens when corruption extends itself into a government system.

If there wasn't the corruption in government, then there would not be a need for socialism. Socialism needs corruption to make itself viable.

I would mention also that Bill Gates made billions off of his Microsoft corporation and he is pushing Common Core standards which ironically involves strong arming by government and coercion into brainwashing and indoctrination but they do it using carrot and stick method, we will give the states money but you have to do this.....The other part of that corporate public/private partnership is that Pearson(educators and computer techs will know about this) stands to gain a lot corporately from all the high stakes testing being forced through CC. Bill Gates bought off the NGA and Teachers association too.
Sickening isn't it?

So you're in agreement with kaylaluv that Sanders' position is not socialist?

Why does he call himself one, then?

Why does he get to make up the definition? What are his linguistic credentials?
