I think people on ATS are going to tend to expose themselves (heh) to things more often than your average Joe. Not sure if I buy that this is linked to intelligence.

Also some people are very good at guessing. One of those languages I hadn't even heard of and guessed it correct.

Little Miss Smarty Pants! Nice work! Which ones threw you? I had basically no clue on the Arabic/Pashtu and Urdu they all looked so very squiggly.

I agree it's about exposure than anything else, the smart part is making yourself available for learning new stuff, including travel ,National Geographic mag, a language junkie or a history buff.
