The story opens with the body of an Asian woman found in a conference room of some computer tech firm I think in Cupertino California. It's been a while since I read it though. Life imitating Art.

It was actually downtown Los Angeles in both the novel and film.

Please explain to me what part of 'gun nearby' and 'head wound' gives you the impression that this is simply an overdose situation?

You saw that? Or read it…

Seen the actual body? No. But read and seen it determined death by gun shot wound from ABC7 news. Here is a link to news video and article for you to see and read too! KGOTV-ABC7 News

Did you read that link> Its all over the place…

Dispatch: "... bleeding with a head wound to the head .. possibly has a gun. looks like security was escorting the employee down."

The Santa Clara County Sheriff's Office confirms a male employee was found dead inside the building.
"It will be up to coroner to determine the manner and cause of death," said Sgt. Andrea Urena.

Dispatch sound initially suggested there may have been others involved.

Dispatch: "… they're advising that there is a body in one of the conference rooms with a gun, so we're not really sure if multiple people involved."

Edit: Sorry not doubting you, just the official announcements. I always suspect those. Look at it this way… when little people shoot it out, they show the body lying in the street on breaking news. Compare that to this hush hush, delaying announcements, waiting for the autopsy, and the conflicting signals from first responders (in dispatches above).

Large corporations are always covered for by police and the media.

If someone commits suicide at work they are making a statement.

Holy cow! I actually finally found something I agree with you! Absolutely, it seems like a suicide. When one does this at work rather than home or outlier region, they are definitely trying to send a message! Now, for ATS, we need to try to decipher what this message is!

Maybe he was drug addict, went into the unused conference room to shoot up and overdosed. Also embarrassing.

It seems we are in agreement that he didn't die from an overdose. Even with both conflicting stories, it sounds like suicide by an employee who was mostlikely being fired.

Now it 'sounds like' and 'most likely'. The only thing we can agree on… We'll never know what actually happened.

The message is

IF THE FBI ASKS YOU TO UNLOCK A PHONE DO IT.
DONT MAKE THEM LOOK STUPID IN THE PUBLICS EYE.
DONT MAKE THEM BEG .
