Always the Note

And still the box remains unopened,
Your beautiful gift, sentimental token.
Wrapped with a ribbon that I never untied,
For I didn't care much, about the item inside.

I could've opened it a long time ago,
Found pleasure within the gift you bestow,
Wore the delicate charm, for all others to see,
And pretend that it proved your love for me.

Instead I opened what I felt really mattered,
It's so worn from my touch, old and tattered.
I've read them so much, the words that you wrote,
For it was never the gift, it was always the note.

The pen . . sometimes . . extends the heart,
Gifts can't feel . . though they play their part . . in love.
