all this is rather interesting.

THE JERUSALEM POST
Jan. 12, 2005
According to a group of 71 Jewish scholars who met this week in the Old City of Jerusalem in the form of a modern-day Sanhedrin – a duplicate of the religious tribunal which convened during the time of the Second Temple – a coronation day is growing closer.
The group composed largely of Kahane sympathizers that gave itself the name Sanhedrin in October, however, met Sunday to discuss the creation of a Jewish monarchy in the State of Israel.
For the past several years a group called the Monarchists has conducted extensive research into the lineage of several families in an effort to discover who has the closest bloodline to the biblical King David – a requirement for any future Jewish king.
Rabbi Yosef Dayan from Psagot, known for his recent threats to place a death curse on Prime Minister Ariel Sharon, is said to be a leading candidate to become the "king of Israel."
"Dayan has the best lineage to King David," several members of the Sanhedrin told The Jerusalem Post. They say he has two documented ancient sources which draw a direct line between him and the males in his family to King David some 3,000 years ago.

There is only one slight problem here...it doesn't matter how many males he can trace himself back to..by jewish law and canon it is the 'mother' who determines ones jewishness since [as we have reasoned for almost 6,000 years] one only truly knows who his mother is.
Recently we have had reinforcement to that idea with the discovery of the innate properties and qualities conferred by the mitochondrial DNA..which is traced back through the female line and not the male.
he could provide geneological charts and wedding certificates going back to Moses and beyond and that still proves nothing under jewish law. Unless one has an ancient cloth known to be from the House of David..or some left over pubes from an old royal cloak known to be King David's that can be compared with his own DNA smear, Reb Dayan has got lessss than bupkis for a claim. These rabbis are out for other things than the manifestation of God's glory or to bring about the messiah's return. Believe me when I say their concerns are much more earthly.
Oh, and one more thing...to date not a stone, slab, or scrap of paper can be found anywhere in the middle east confirming the existence of King Solomon or his Temple. Not one.
Go figure...
