Atonement

I realize now that peace will never come.
My affliction will linger forever on.
I see the uselessness of my penance and
the mania of your vengeance.
It twists our souls
Out of control
Spiraling down
Through the wormhole
To our blackness.

A thousand myths and a million sins.
The deeds I’ve committed to prove obedience.
Your demons visit me, now, when I’m awake.
They whisper in my ear “Your soul we’ll take”.
I run and hide
Close my eyes
Count to ten
Wait and then.

Like a snake you come from behind.
Exposing secrets I've hidden in my mind.
Your will was done and evil I’d become.
Another one of your devotees.
Killing, in your name, your enemies.

My strength now gone.
My heart forever black.
You’ve come for me again.
Another attack.
It has become clear to me
Your lies and hypocrisy
Unforgivable evidence
I had chosen not to see

The pain had once been ecstasy.
You said the pain would set us free.
As I stared at the blood upon my hands
I knew what I must do to destroy your plans.

I bowed at your feet praying for conclusion.
You stood above me...your role in this illusion.
As I reached up my hands for you to take
I cut deep and swift, made no mistake.
Two knives/two lives the deed was done.
Ashamed of the monster I had become

Now as our spirits float away.
You and I will anguish in the darkness we’ve made.
The demons will guard us locked within.
And we shall never see the beauty of light again..
There's no other answer for souls black like ours.
My resolve will be the key.
Your hate will be the bars.
