And almost entirely democratic party members at that time.
Don't leave out that important bit.
The kkk was started by democrats and controlled by democrats when they were most powerful and did most of their lynchings of both black and white
republicans.
Fair enough. Now, I'll repeat that line to you. Make sure you don't leave out why the racist conservatives left the Democratic Party and joined the
Republican Party.
There was a certain situation called the "Civil Rights Movement" which the racist Dems opposed. But when the Civil Rights Act of 1964 passed and ended
racial segregation in America, the racist conservatives moved to the Republican Party in protest. This was exacerbated by the Voting Rights Act of
1965 (which gave African Americans the right to vote) and the 1967 Supreme Court case of Loving vs Virginia (which overturned all State bans on
interracial marriage). This is also when the liberal Republicans switched parties, joining the Democratic Party.
Nixon, Atwater, and other Republican leaders even came up with "The Southern Strategy" which was meant to exploit the racial tension even further. And
it's literally the Republican Party's election strategy to this day. Make sure you don't forget that part too, ok?
