NATO, Russia council to meet for first time since mid-2014

Well it looks like NATO is going to meet with Russia to try and work out their differences concerning a few things...

BRUSSELS (Reuters) - A forum bringing together Russia and its former Cold War adversary NATO will convene in the coming weeks for the first time since the Ukraine crisis halted its activities, both sides said on Friday.

The NATO-Russia Council was established in 2002 but was effectively suspended months after Moscow annexed the Crimean peninsula in March 2014. Both sides have now agreed to hold talks at ambassador level in Brussels in the next two weeks.

"We will discuss military activities, with particular focus on transparency and risk reduction," it said, adding that Afghanistan and regional threats were also on the agenda. As NATO accelerates its biggest military build-up in eastern Europe since the Cold War, the alliance wants to talk to Moscow about improved military transparency to avoid misunderstandings.

This is a good thing! Meeting and Talking with each other is way better than refusing to have any kind or dialog. Our leaders should realize this by now because nothing changes and sometimes the political fallout gets worse when you don't keep the lines of communication open.

I think there was some albeit small a line of communication has been there they just had some things to work out, and hopefully this yields good things for those involved and actually all of us.

Well, talk is good. Don't want a misunderstanding. However, there remains a significant issue of Russia's annexation of another countries territory i.e. Crimea.

This meeting is the continuation of our political dialogue, as agreed by NATO Heads of State and Government. At the same time, there will be no return to business as usual until Russia again respects international law.

Absolutely right

We should be working with Moscow. Our interests are basically the same, pumping as much black gold from under our feet and dealing with Muslim nutters while enjoying a good old bottle of beer/vodka.

To any western politicians reading................. Let Russia have its sphere of influence in its former Soviet states and stop surrounding it with NATO bases and offensive weapons. Russia and Russians have their pride in their nation, respect this

Or, as is reality, he's driving Russia into the mud in a process of increasing internal repression, corruption and economic silliness.

Look at who started Russia's collapse - it was US lead sanctions on Putin over Ukraine. That and those falling oil prices that have bitten a lot of economies

Putin is master of Russia's fate. The interference and belligerence in Ukraine is no one's fault but Putin's. Putin had a choice.

On sanctions. The impact from EU sanctions are the ones that are punitive to Russia. The EU has been in the driving seat for sanctions.

You can blame everything on the US if you want, but you are fooling yourself.

? Russia does not have a "sphere of influence". Russia wants one, but as all the ex-Soviet states have shown as they have chosen Europe over Russia including Ukraine and Georgia, Russia is an unhelpful and difficult neighbour.

Russia needs to move on from the past and create a sphere of influence based on trust and cooperation, rather than control.

Not Putins style he believes in force and control. That's why he just established a police force under his direct control. They will have 20000 troops under his control stationed on moscow. I'm sure many politicians are worried because this sounds a lot like the nazi SS. They have been given the authority to seek out traitors and terrorists. Funny for supposedly hating nazis how many of their tactics putin employs.

Conflict with Russia is not useful.

Dialogue and negotiation is the only possibility for progress.

Mitigating the effect that economic sanctions have on the Russian people should be the first item on the agenda.

Perpetuating the Cold War is just counterproductive.

Surely we have enough enemies already?
