On my computer notepad was moved into a subfolder under windows apps, all the files I had saved were destroyed or translated into garble, or unaccessible. In the program itself all the fonts and other buttons were gone leaving me with basically a typewriter.

Then you were not using Notepad but Wordpad. Notepad is just an ASCII text editor, no formatting features. At least that's how I remember it from the last time I used Windows (almost ten years ago).

Wordpad was the Windows stripped-down word processing toy, did basic docs and saved them in .RTF format (maybe a very basic .DOC as well, if my memory serves me).

Big difference between Notepad and Wordpad.

It was Sun microsystems that was brought out by oracle, they basically tried to bring everything under their control that sun had worked on with the public and thus once oracle took control they decided as was possible under the old license terms to fork it under a new name.

I'm glad I asked here. It looks like a couple people also benefited from it. Good deal.
