Other social media sites are contributing to the dumbing down agenda though.

Agreed, I think facebook is the worst culprit.
Someone I thought was sensible 'shared' a handy hint that if at an ATM and being forced to withdraw money by a robber just type your PIN number in backwards and the police are automatically called.
I said what if your number is say 2112 or 6226 or whatever? Clearly bull#, but the stupid masses suck it up without question.

That's what happens. i did it once myself and had to edit quickly.

On topic, I've often thought that the use of youtube for information given by the spoken word is having a dumbing-down effect, simply because it slows down the intake of information (compared with reading) and consequently reduces both the quantity and the variety of the information that can be absorbed.

Agreed about youtube, I've got an annoying mate/associate who is incapable of presenting any coherent argument in the medium of typed words, all youtube, no links to PDF's, documents, or anything else, all youtube.
I'll take it back actually, he isn't a mate, just a prick associate in my social circles.

I have watched some great, intelligent and informative stuff on YouTube
Some stuff was more informative than what I learned at uni
I also like moocs courses

Go figure,sometimes I turn my mind to jelly watching conspiracy stuff on the tube, yes I am weird

Last night after a thread on here I read half an hours worth of funny texts.
Is it any different to mills and boon books or Adam sandler movies

Yes that is just one of many that show what I am talking about. I don't know how many times that video has been debunked, but used as though it is the truth.
