Security is almost non existent once on the base in my experience.I was at Travis AFB last year and once I'd got to the heritage museum I was left alone to wander with a half hearted warning from my escort (a retired serviceman) not to wander TOO far.There was no one watching me and I could have quite easily gotten onto the flight line which was only a few minutes walk away from where I was.



Cross the road behind the Globemaster,walk across the car park and the flightline is the other side of the hangars.

Yet another California story. A car on I-15 near San Diego stopped on the side of the interstate to synch his Bluetooth. While they were parked, a small plane that was in the area was forced to make an emergency landing on the interstate. During the landing, in the left lane, the aircraft skidded across the interstate, and slammed into the car. One person in the car was killed, and the pilot suffered life threatening injuries.

I couldn't figure out either how the driver could crash through the main gate and get to the aircraft. Ok, this gives more detail, involving the side road access. There's a map, also.


The base has a heavily fortified main gate with steel barriers that must be lowered before vehicles can enter. The gate is guarded by military police armed with assault rifles.

Officials indicated the Jeep did not enter through that point, but instead took a different road to reach the jet, which Ashliman said was near a runway at the north end of the station, about 7 miles from the main entrance.

The driver proceeded down Reeves to a checkpoint at the main flight operations area.

What happened at the checkpoint was unclear, but the driver got past it and drove across an open field and onto the flightline.


How did an SUV get through Lemoore base security and crash into a warplane?

At least this isn't as bad as the guy who, flying over the beach in a single engine something or other, had an engine failure and, with oil strewn all over his windshield and unable to see in front of him, decided to land on the beach instead of ditching a few hundred feet offshore. On landing he hit a runner square in the back on the beach. Beach runner dead, pilot fine.

The plane was once owned by major league catcher Matt Nokes, who made a noteworthy landing on busy I-15 when the engine quit on its second flight on Feb. 18, 2000.

Nokes guided the high-performance $500,000 plane to a smooth landing and safely taxied off the road without injuries.

Nokes went on to fly the plane every day for five years without incident before selling it. He said it had been rebuilt several times since he sold it.

The stretch of freeway is no stranger to unusual landings. CHP spokesman Parent said he's aware of three other planes that have come down on that stretch of freeway about 50 miles north of San Diego in the past decade.

Nokes said the freeway is a popular route for flying because there are fewer flight restrictions than along the Interstate 5 corridor.

hey puddles can be quite dangerous. i was working construction behind a walmart one time and stepped into a puddle that i thought was an inch or 2 deep the guy on bull dozer told me one minute i was there next my hard hat was floating puddle was really a muddyhole 12 feet deep.

No, I just really can't find much to redeem California besides Edwards. They've cost me a few thousand dollars over the last few years. There are some people that are tolerable, but overall I don't expect much from that state. Heh.

I think you may be confusing "California" with "Californians." California, as a state, is very full of itself, casting regulations and laws about that affect the rest of the country. I'm sure the government thinks it is very forward-thinking, but to anyone from the outside the word would be "stifling." I would never live there--not because I don't like California's people, but because of government restrictions and regulations. I believe Zaph has some personal experience with that. So don't take it personally.
