This story is being reported by the Daily Mail and other news sources and is pretty lame.

Cat which is both male AND female is set for gender reassignment surgery... as soon as vets decide if it wants to be girl or boy

The DM reported a similar story from Canada in January.

www.dailymail.co.uk...

Firstly DM, the term is intersex, not hermaphrodite. The reason intersex cats have surgery is to reduce the risk of complications due to the condition. The Veterinary Surgeon establishes which gender the cat actually is. The cat or its owner don't decide on gender (lol).

Apart from that can you really see a Vet performing cosmetic gender reassignment surgery for felines, on the whim of the owner (oops guardians)?

Perineal urethrostomy involves penile amputation and shortening of the urethra to reduce the risk of urinary obstruction and infection. It is also performed on older male cats as well who develop obstruction from salt crystallizing. The procedure does not include the formation of an artificial vagina.

Here's an idea. The press know gender reassignment is a hot and controversial topic. Instead of educating your readers, lets make some silly story up about a cat which demeans and humours gender dysphoria.

... and they call this journalism, pah

Edit: I forgot to mention that intersex cats are doctored/neutered.

It really happens. Vets sometimes get dogs which had both male and female sexual organs. They had to figure what sex it really was and remove the extra bits.

I did wonder this as well initially although the Manchester Evening News reported the story.

One of my closest friends is finally all set with a date for surgery. Gender dysphoria is serious business, which the article in The Daily Mail deals with in typically thoughtless fashion.

We are all human first. We must remember that.

I asked my sister in law who is a vet (not the Vietnam kind) about this and she said instances like this are legit.

I totally agree. I thought I had put this in the rant section.

I would try counseling first.

Does the cat like art ?

Is it a neat freak ?

It happens.

I hope my post did not come off as spiked or barbed. I am reaching the end of my broadcast day, so to speak, and so I may not be applying the necessary finesse to my postings.

What is the difference?

I know hermaphrodites have both sex organs. What is intersex?

Whenever I perform gender reassignment surgery on a cat, they accuse me of animal cruelty.

Yeah, learned that one the hard way.
A veterinarian taught me how it is done, involves a rug and a razor blade.

Intersex is a group of conditions where there is a discrepancy between the external genitals and the internal genitals (the testes and ovaries).

The older term for this condition, hermaphroditism, came from joining the names of a Greek god and goddess, Hermes and Aphrodite. Hermes was a god of male sexuality (among other things) and Aphrodite a goddess of female sexuality, love, and beauty.

Although the older terms are still included in this article for reference, they have been replaced by most experts (and patients and families) because they are misleading, confusing, and insensitive. Increasingly this group of conditions is being called disorders of sex development (DSDs).

That's where two things cross.

What we really want to know is if the dog ever gets confused later on in life and gets angry if it can't use the fire hydrant of its choice.
