The biggest critics of America, the ones who do all these comparisons between Europe (which country by the way? There are many and they are all very
different!) are AMERICANS.
Frigging arrogant ignorant imbeciles!
Look, part of our american values is individualism, which requires-
Being self taught, self mastered... being able to spot our own weaknesses, failings, or faults and correct them ourselves, instead of being dependent
upon others to point them out and fix them.
Result? we are very self critical, and spend much time trying to spot our weaknesses before others do, and search for solutions to them, often looking
around at the various examples to study.
So us Americans criticize our selves, and our own nation, a lot. We point out other examples and potential solutions to choose from in correcting
The continent of Europe and the people that live there do not hate the US, Americans, nor do they waste their time criticizing them. It is your fellow
americans that point out our countries failings. This article and the OP, are attacking the wrong people (and in the process, proving the critics
right, that our culture is degrading into ignorance, intellectual laziness, and emotional reactivism).
The biggest critics are probably the Americans that have gone outside the walls for extended periods, and discovered the truths that were hidden from
us- like that the rest of the world is not poverty stricken and living in oppression- that is a lie fed to us to keep us from being discontent and
uprising against our oppressors. "The Socialist" is the myth of the monster in the woods, created to keep you from wandering out of it.
I admit to being a critic of the US myself. The Europeans I know here have no idea how bad it is in my native land. None. We all see the world not as
it is, but as we ourselves are.
Before coming to ATS and seeing this, I read an article which was similar, about the oft repeated comparisons to the Finnish school system, which is
producing superior results (closer to what we'd like to see in our own school system), the author basically resumed the reason for the rant- "I am
sick of being Jan to the Marcia Finland is"
(for foriegners, this is a reference to a popular tv show many of us grew up with, "the Brady Bunch", in which the eldest daughter was named
Marcia, the middle child Jan, and illustrated the usual plight of the middle child - in which the eldest is constantly idealized and used as and
It's bitter jealousy. That's all.
Now, pick yourself up by your bootstraps and be a real American! Be able to see ways we have to learn and grow and develop further, and get on with
it! We're not a peoples who value sitting around wimpering in jealousy and badmouthing others to stroke our ego! We don't believe in staying in our
ruts and mud puddles to avoid the discomfort of growth and progression! We believe in looking forward
and being led by our intellect, not
childish emotion. We use competition as a way of challenging ourselves, not simply proving anything to anyone else.
When the urge arises to feel sorry for yourself, just counter it and remind yourself you are American- you don't do that. That creates bitter
rumor-mongering passive laziness.
