Just spotted this on the BBC world news site I remember a similar one in January..

A large fire has hit a residential tower in the United Arab Emirates, police say, in the third such incident in a little more than a year. The fire struck the tower in the emirate of Ajman, north of Dubai, the region's police said on Twitter. Reports in the UAE say there were no casualties, and that everyone was evacuated from the tower in al-Sawan. On New Year's Eve, a large fire engulfed the luxury 63-storey Address Hotel in central Dubai. The latest fire struck late on Monday in the Ajman One complex, a development of 12 towers with some 3,000 apartments.

Hi Sky,

Did they ever figure out what the reason was for the last fire?

Almost seems alittle to weird.

I'm thinking they had said that people were BBQ'ing and the siding caught fire? Does this sound right to anyone else?

Yeah, the outer layer 'the look' you see is all prefab crap.. usually its fire proofing rating is high, but they cut corners on a LOT of those buildings.. (Dubai is Bankrupt). Many of the Skyscrapers have 100's of floors empty. Really sad.

I wouldn't doubt there is some insurance fraud going on too. The Sheikh's have someone burn it down, they get cash, and don't fix it.. or pay super low prices to get it fixed..

This all became a game.. one Sheikh built a skyscraper, then another Sheikh wanted to out do it, then another etc... was a pissing match that bankrupted Dubai.. Then the Burj ended all that.

According to modern engineering physics, this building should collapse on its own footprint in about an hour and a half.

The problem is that they have the money to build these high towers (only God knows from where, since their oil is running out) , but they don't hire qualified people to build it, nor to install things correctly. And they don't think taking safety measurements are that important either.

The Middle East still has a lot to learn about modern architecture. It's one of the reasons they usually hire people from abroad to design and build it for them, but they will save money wherever they can.
