Blanking out

Topic started on 15-6-2003 @ 10:00 AM by magestica

Have you ever been talking to someone and just blank out? Forget what you were saying mid sentence momentarily? This has happened to me a few times and the feeling is really weird. I'll be talking to someone and then just almost black out for a few seconds, I literally stop talking and everything feels dark, almost like I might faint, my palms get all sweaty and then after a few seconds I come to, and am like "Where was I"? Good lord! This sounds like mult-personality disorder as I'm writing this Well it's only happened a few times and I come to very quickly, but it leaves me thinking about it for the rest of the day. I wonder why it happens and what does it mean *if anything* and has it ever happened to any of you?

*BTW, I know this probably doesn't belong in the paranormal, but it sure feels paranormal to me*

...A neuronal dysfunction of the memory.

The symptom you describe is also called (in french ) "Le petit mal", the small "evil".
These are very short epilepsy crisis. It probably happen to you when your body suddenly change of temperature. Don't worry, it aint lethal. Many people live with this syndrom...

What you are encountering are may be I think called "petit mal's" very small seizures. but in this case so small, that you are not affected.

Here is a defn

A petit mal seizure is a temporary disturbance of brain function caused by abnormal electrical activity in the brain and characterized by abrupt, short-term lack of conscious activity ("absence") or other abnormal change in behavior.

Petit mal seizures occur most commonly in people under age 20, usually in children ages 6 to 12. They may occur in combination with other types of seizures.

Typical petit mal seizures last only a few seconds, with full recovery occurring rapidly and no lingering confusion. Such seizures usually manifest themselves as staring episodes or "absence spells" during which the child's activity or speech ceases.

The child may stop talking in mid-sentence or cease walking. One to several seconds later, speech or activity resume. If standing or walking, a child seldom falls during one of these episodes.

"Spells" can be infrequent or very frequent, occurring many times per hour. Up to hundreds of seizures can occur in a single day. They may occur for weeks to months before they are noticed. They can interfere with school function and learning. Teachers may interpret these seizures as lack of attention or other misbehavior.

Atypical petit mal seizures begin slower, last longer, and may have more noticeable muscle activity than typical petit mal seizures. There is usually no memory of the seizure.

No cause can usually be found for typical petit mal seizures. No neurologic or other disorders are usually discovered. Atypical seizures may or may not be associated with other neurologic disorders.

Causes may be unidentifiable, or identified as congenital brain abnormalities, complications of kidney or liver disease, or brain injuries from trauma or birth complications. Sometimes, a family history of seizures indicates a hereditary type of seizures.

I'm not sure if this is the same thing, but I occasionally get strange episodes where I'm still aware of my surroundings and what I was doing, but everything suddenly seems unreal, like I'm watching it on TV or just imagining it. I can still keep talking, but it feels like I'm an observer, listening to myself talk and hoping I don't say something dumb. (I usually stop for a few seconds until it passes, just in case.)

If it's related to petit mal epilepsy then it must be a very mild form, because it's more like a strong feeling of detachment rather than blanking out.

if you are talking about when you blank out and think your going to fient, you get the head rush, and like your vision blacks out for a few mins then get a head ache, I had that happen before, I didn't eat for 2 days, I did a lot of acid the week before then I was just partying for 2 days straight all I ate was some jello shots and some chips, basically just drank and smoked weed all week end, I stood up really fast and had it happen i was like damn yo

I had to sit down and chill for like 15 mins then i was fine

but if you mean the normal blanking out

like
Damn what was I talking about?
I do that a lot
a lot more then I am tripping or high

I had that exact same feeling quite a few times tripping, and then like 3 times a few days after I tripped I'd be chilling with some friend smoking a blunt and it'd happen.

That happens to me all the time. But also have any of you been looking at something like your hand and it suddenly disappears? Is that normal?

But this happens a lot when your tripping of shrooms. You just suddenly reset. It is freaky.

Yes a few years ago it began happening to me. It is now a regular occurance, I can stand up to get something or say something and then have no idea why I did. My mother has Alzheimers and CAT Scans have revealed that there is no flow of blood to more than half her brain, and little if any short term memory. Her condition as well as mine is a result of untreated high blood pressure causing the bursting of small blood vessels in the brain resulting in a lack of circulation and loss of function. In my case it is hereditary in some it is lifestyle.
Check your blood pressure and see if there is a correalation.
A very good friend of mine tells me not to worry, it happens to dogs all the time. They get up and want to go out, they go out and want to come in, it is the same thing.
It is more of a problem for people around you than it is for you! Relax and enjoy life

Love

Tut

It only happens to me when I've got too much on my mind, on the go.....that's what can occur when you live a busy lifestyle & don't have time to stop & smell the roses.....fortunately only happens on occasion.
