NEW YORK (Reuters) - Thousands of photos recovered from the World Trade Centre ruins after the September 11, 2001, attacks have been restored and will be posted on a Web site for people to identify and claim, officials say.

Some 8,000 photos will appear on the restricted-access Web site beginning on January 18, with deceased victims' relatives provided with a password to enter the site, the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey said on Friday.

Employees of former World Trade Centre tenants will get access later this year, added the Port Authority, which owns the 16-acre (6.5-hectare) Trade Centre site.

Nearly 2,800 people were killed after hijacked planes slammed into the twin towers, causing their collapse.

The photos, pulled from some 1.6 million tonnes of debris sifted through by workers at the Fresh Kills landfill in the borough of Staten Island, were restored at no charge by Eastman Kodak, Port Authority spokesman Lou Martinez said.

"We strongly believe that recovering photos that once filled office desks and walls in Trade Centre offices will greatly help families who lost loved ones," Lillian Valenti, chief of the Port Authority's office of medical services, said in a statement.

The New York police department has custody of the photos and will oversee claims for the pictures as they are identified by families and former tenants.

Not sure how I feel about this. One part of me thinks it could be a part of a healing for some,on the hand, will it only stir up more sorrow for those who have tried to put it in the back of their minds.
