Actual history is vague as recorded evidence is sparse, but that's true for many things not just Freemasonry.

I'm well aware of the titles and ranks we use, and why we use them.

You say it, but I'm well aware of the practices in England. I stand not by some outsider's perception, but my own experience and knowledge on the subject. The rites may have emerged after the fact, but the degrees that comprise them each have a unique history and some date back to 16th century which is older than the 3-degree system used in the Lodge.
