Air Force names 7 subcontractors on Northrop's B-21 stealth bomber

I'm surprised no one mentioned this one.

Looks like the list of contractors has been posted already.

P&W will of course be making the engines.

And the other contractors will work on airframe or mission systems.

Not much more news other than this.

The U.S. Air Force has named seven subcontractors that will accompany Falls Church-based Northrop Grumman Corp. (NYSE: NOC) on the $80 billion B-21 stealth bomber program.

At a briefing Monday, Secretary of the Air Force Deborah Lee James revealed that the subcontractors will include Pratt & Whitney, BAE Systems, GKN Aerospace, Janicki Industries, Dulles-based Orbital ATK Inc. (NYSE: OA), Rockwell Collins Inc. (NYSE: COL) and Spirit Aerosystems (NYSE: SPR).

It was mentioned in the B-21 thread. A couple expected and already figured out, two or three surprises.

Doesn't hurt having a thread about it. It's a pretty big announcement.

Surprised that General Dynamics was not on the list. The cancelled Navy A-12 Stealth Bomber Program had a lot of input from GD and McDonnell Douglas. I would be sure that a lot of that research would have been relevant. Military contracts work in strange ways.

There were several surprises on that list. The company in Washington, according to Sammamishman does composite work, but is small, so won't be doing any major components.

We knew Pratt was doing the engines already, and it was going to be either Honeywell or Rockwell Collins for those systems, and BAE was pretty much a given. Orbital, and the other two unknown companies were a surprise, as was Spirit.

There are also several companies on that list that happen to be sub-contractors for Boeing and do some large scale and small scale composite work for them.

The GKN Aerospace in St. Louis has a James S. McDonnell Blvd. address, so that gets you a little McDonnell Douglas connection! As Mr. Beeblebrox mentioned, they are one that does some subcontractor work for Boeing and are on an adjacent property to several Boeing buildings in St. Louis (they practically share parking).
