Romney and Rubio Attack Trump University, But Both Are Tied to Predatory Colleges

The hypocrisy, while not surprising, coming from politicians never ceases to blow my mind. Was Trump University a ripoff, fraud, whatever you want to call it? Most likely, without a doubt. But Rubio hammering Trump about it in the last debate, then Romney reiterating it in last weeks intro to try to get the brokered convention nod, is just ridiculous, as they both have been involved in shady schools.

"But it is a testament to the long-standing political influence of the for-profit college industry that both Rubio and Romney in fact have their own extensive ties to predatory for-profit schools. In fact, Romney has been an investor in some of the companies that own these schools".

Of course it's hypocritical of them. If Trump wasn't running for president, they wouldn't care in the least bit that those "students" were ripped off. If Rubio and Romney really cared, they'd be fighting for private student loans to be dischargeable in bankruptcy. But they won't because, like you've pointed out, they're all tied to these corrupt schools which rip off people for federal/private education loans. Not to mention they're probably receiving donations from large banks just to make sure education loans aren't dischargeable.

It just goes to show just how bought and paid for politicians are.

The GOP is done.

Trump would win if the backed him 100%.

These two snivelly Cuban's will say absolutely anything to get elected.

Team up on Trump. Then Trump takes the bait. If they all focused.

If Trump talked about jobs and the economy and the GOP backed him.

They would be in full control of DC. But, not full control of Trump.

They would rather destroy their own Party than listen to their own people...

Trump University was a full and complete fraud. It gave nothing it promised.

I read the article. I am familiar with Full Sail and University of Phoenix Online, I have friends that when through their programs, got jobs and have a normal student loan payment.

ITT tech, is not listed in the article, but it is a for-profit college. I would say expensive, but my ex-husband went there and became very successful. I believe he has paid it off. I worked while he went to school, while I should have been in graduate school, but that is my mistake.

None of these are on par with the fraud of Trump university. Trump University is more like a series of high priced seminars.

I don't think their ethnicity has anything to do with this.

More clarification than a race thing.

It happens to be true as well.

At least the GOP has more than two poop smelling old white people.

Quantity is not a good thing, in this case.

Privatize education! So start a for-profit "college" that depends on govt money (low income student, military benefits) to run it, and since it's for profit, heck, make sure investors and administrators rake in those tax dollars. Now, to attract students into that predatory college system, tell Americans that everyone must now "go to college".

Take away the govt grants and what have you got.... oh, wait, before the economic melt down of 2007, there were plenty of tv commercials telling homeowners to re-finance their homes in order to send their kids to college. Or maybe pay an investment consultant to open up special college savings accounts backed by casinos...er ....Wall Street.

Too many for-profits see students not as learners but as sources of money, tax dollars. And the for-profit is not left holding the bag for the loans but the students. They can offer an inadequate program and not be penalized.

Con men know there's a sucker born every minute. The American 99% have been fleeced for decades now. Not just in education.

I feel sorry for the people who lost all of that money falling for the Trump University con. But this isn't the only one of those real-estate training seminars rackets that I've heard ads for on local tv and radio. I've even known of people who have paid good money and attended them over the years. And, as expected, nothing ever came of their investment.

At least Trump University didn't take Federal Pell Grants and Guaranteed Student Loans like some of the other colleges listed in the OP's source.

A couple of old sayings come to mind here:
- "If something sounds too good to be true, it probably is."
- "Caveat emptor - latin for 'Let the buyer beware.'"

A good friend of mine made a good point recently about falling for cons like this: "The best and most memorable lessons I've ever learned in life have also been the most expensive."

Trump University was nothing but the decades old late night TV Real Estate seminar fraud. A sucker is born every minute and Real Estate attracts a lot of suckers thinking they are going turn into the next property mogul. I'm sure Trump just licensed his name to the seminars for some quick cash. He is the most well known Real Estate developer ever, so it makes sense.

U of Phoenix and many of the other for profit schools are capitalizing off the availability of student loans. They charge exorbitant tuition while the degrees from these schools are practically worthless. The schools have little to no prestige associated with them. While I am sure some students do OK, my guess is that many wind up with an over priced degree that does nothing for their career prospects.

There are probably less than 75 colleges / universities in the US that are worth taking student loans out to attend. Even many of those aren't worth it unless you are studying certain majors.
